Embarking on a journey toward higher education can be a transformative journey of cultural enrichment. For Noor AlMajdouie, her experience pursuing a Master of Science in Interior Design at Ball State University was more than just an academic.
As a student from Saudi Arabia, AlMajdouie discovered Ball State University while researching the top universities that offered strong academic and research-based interior design programs.
AlMajdouie’s research explored how natural light and sustainable design can improve healthcare spaces and support well-being.
“I was especially interested in how natural lighting impacts patients’ recovery in Saudi Arabia,” she said.
When AlMajdouie started the program, she focused completely on her studies. After her first year, she began working while continuing her coursework. Balancing both was challenging, but her time management and prioritization skills played a key role in helping her stay on track.
“I had to be highly organized, set a structured schedule, and make the most of my time to succeed in both areas,” AlMajdouie said.
The diversity of the student body at Ball State University allowed her to learn from different perspectives and design ideas. Engaging with students from various cultural and academic backgrounds exposed her to new ways of thinking and problem-solving.
“I interacted with people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. This exposure was incredibly enriching,” AlMajdouie said. “It was an aspect of my education that I truly valued and enjoyed.”
Despite being an online student, AlMajdouie cultivated meaningful relationships with her professors and collaborated with her classmates through virtual meetings, emails, and discussion forums. Regular communication helped her create a “sense of connection” despite the distance.
AlMajdouie built a friendly and supportive relationship with Professor Kanakri, who always provided guidance and encouragement.
“She was passionate about her field, which made learning from her a great experience,” AlMajdouie said.
The impact of this master’s program extended beyond academic knowledge for AlMajdouie as it equipped her with essential skills for her career as a teaching assistant for the College of Architecture and Design at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in Saudi Arabia. AlMajdouie added that learning from experienced professors helped shape her teaching approach and deepen her understanding of interior design concepts.
AlMajdouie advises prospective and current students in the Master’s in Interior Design at Ball State University to “enjoy the journey, not just the destination.”
“Embrace the learning process, stay curious, and make the most of every opportunity,” AlMajdouie said. “Time management and persistence are key but also remember to enjoy the experience and celebrate your progress along the way.”
