Ball State University Libraries, in collaboration with the Sponsored Projects Administration, has recently become an ORCID member! ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor iD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting scholarly research and researchers. ORCID provides a unique identifier that, when linked to your publications, elevates and tracks the visibility of your scholarship throughout your career. Many Ball State researchers already have an ORCID profile and experience the benefits firsthand. Ball State’s membership unlocks a range of integrations that can further enhance the power of your ORCID iD, making managing your scholarship easier than ever.
What is an ORCID iD?
An ORCID iD is a sixteen-digit identification number that is uniquely associated with a scholar. In your ORCID profile, you can upload information such as your publications, place of work, funding sources, and more. You get to decide what information is visible to the public. Your ORCID iD follows you throughout changes to (or variations of) your name, your title, and the institution you work for. It distinguishes you from other scholars with similar names and it tracks your scholarly record in one convenient place. Using your ORCID iD saves you time when applying for grant funding or new positions, showcasing your scholarship, and searching for the whole body of another scholar’s work. Once you enter information into your ORCID profile, it is saved to be conveniently reused whenever you need it. Please visit the University Libraries ORCID Guide for more information and instructions for setting up your ORCID profile.
What does the University Libraries’ ORCID membership do for me?
The University Libraries’ membership in ORCID provides even more benefits for our researchers including the opportunity to integrate campus systems with the ORCID registry. These integrations allows these systems to more accurately recognize your work and store relevant data in our systems. The membership also supports the increasingly frequent requirement to include ORCID iDs in the research funding and publication processes. Partnering with ORCID ensures that Ball State University remains aligned with the research industry’s standards while elevating the work of our researchers.
The University Libraries will be offering opportunities for you to learn more about ORCID. Stay tuned for information about upcoming workshops and information sessions. If you have questions or would like to get started with and ORCID iD, please contact Emma Giles, Scholarly Communication and Affordable Learning Librarian, or Lisa Jarrell, Associate Dean for Research, Access, and Open Education.
