Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool. A tool that’s transforming how we access, create, and share information. But using AI effectively requires critical thinking, curiosity, and a solid understanding of how it works. Do you have what it takes to use AI well?

Ball State University Libraries has created a guide on AI to help you build those skills. Through five short, engaging videos, you’ll explore how to evaluate the accuracy and credibility of AI-generated content, an essential part of becoming an informed and responsible AI user.

Discover how to identify AI hallucinations, or instances where AI tools generate content that may be incorrect, misleading, or simply nonsensical. You’ll also learn about bias in generative AI, especially in image generation, and how societal stereotypes can influence outputs.

To help you navigate these challenges, the guide introduces the SIFT method, a practical, four-step strategy for verifying information:

  • S: Stop before accepting information at face value.
  • I: Investigate the source to assess its credibility.
  • F: Find better coverage by comparing with multiple sources.
  • T: Trace claims, quotes, and media back to their original context.

You’ll also learn about lateral reading, a research technique that encourages looking beyond the original source to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of information.

Whether you’re a student, researcher, or simply curious about AI, this guide will help you sharpen your skills and become a more confident AI user.
