Finding Balance: Tips to De-Stress During the Busy Part of the Semester

Graduate school can feel like a marathon, especially as projects, exams, and responsibilities start to pile up mid-semester. While deadlines and long hours are part of the journey, taking care of yourself is just as important as finishing that paper or preparing for a presentation. Here are a few simple reminders to help you breathe, reset, and move forward with balance.

1. Move Your Body
Even a short walk across campus or ten minutes of stretching between study sessions can do wonders for your energy and focus. Physical activity helps clear your mind and lowers stress hormones, making it easier to return to your work with clarity.

2. Break Up the Day
It’s easy to fall into marathon study sessions, but your brain works best in shorter, focused bursts. Try scheduling 25–50 minutes of work followed by a 5–10-minute break. This is known as the Pomodoro method of working! Linked below is a Pomodoro timer that you can use right now to structure your work time. Use the pause to grab water, look away from your screen, or check in with a friend.

3. Protect Your Sleep
Late nights may feel necessary, but consistent rest is what keeps your memory sharp and your mood steady. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep when you can, and don’t underestimate the power of a quick nap, especially on long days.

4. Connect with Others
Graduate school can sometimes feel isolating, but you don’t have to carry the stress alone. Reach out to a classmate for a quick chat, join a campus study group, or stop by a Graduate School event. Small moments of connection can provide encouragement and perspective.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Pause
It’s easy to feel guilty when you’re not working, but downtime is part of productivity. Watch a favorite show, journal, meditate, or simply sit quietly with a cup of coffee. Allowing yourself a true pause can actually help you come back more focused.

6. Use Campus Resources
Ball State offers plenty of support—from the Counseling Center and the Writing Center to recreation facilities and student organizations. Don’t hesitate to use these resources; they’re here to help you succeed and stay well.

Remember: Taking care of yourself is not a distraction from your goals—it’s what makes achieving them possible. You’ve worked hard to be here, and giving yourself the space to rest and reset is part of sustaining that effort.
