Meet Dr. Michael Lee, a dynamic leader in the Media Department at Ball State University who brings a world of experience—literally—to his work on campus. With a master’s degree from Michigan State University and a decade of broadcasting experience in South Korea as both an editor and director, Dr. Lee is no stranger to international perspectives and creative storytelling.

Before coming to Ball State, Dr. Lee spent three years teaching at the University of Houston–Clear Lake. Now, he serves as the Associate Chair of the Media Department, where he plays a key role in overseeing curriculum, course scheduling, and much more. But his impact doesn’t stop there—Dr. Lee also chairs the GLOBE Committee and is an active collaborator with the Rinker Center for Global Affairs.

One of his exciting upcoming projects is leading a five-week immersive study abroad program in Seoul, South Korea. This program will give students the chance to experience everyday life in Seoul, explore Korean culture, and even includes travel to Tokyo, Japan. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience designed to inspire students to step out of their comfort zones and see the world from new angles.

Dr. Lee sees global education as more than just a trip abroad. “Throwing yourself into an unfamiliar environment is one of the ways to cultivate your creativity,” he shares. “You’ll learn the importance of diverse perspectives through the program.” Looking ahead, his vision is to engage even more Ball State faculty and students in global learning opportunities and support internationalization efforts across campus.

When asked what he enjoys most about working at Ball State and with the Rinker Center, Dr. Lee doesn’t hesitate: “It is definitely the people. They are kind, understanding, super easy to work with, very professional, and deep in their expertise.”

Outside of work, Dr. Lee has a surprising hobby—he enjoys repairing cars. And if you ever want to strike up a conversation with him, mention Dr. Pepper or the Toyota FJ Cruiser—two of his all-time favorites!

Fluent in Korean and a well-traveled global citizen, Dr. Lee continues to bring energy, insight, and inspiration to Ball State’s international efforts. We’re lucky to have him!
