For more than 100 years, graduates of Ball State University have accomplished mark-making achievements that have left both the Ball State community and the world proud一bestselling novels, dedicated service, award-winning articles, memorable lectures and successful business ventures.
A quick glance at the history of Ball State’s alumni and their success is enough to highlight the seemingly endless amount of talent and potential in our graduates. To celebrate and honor the many alumni who have demonstrated outstanding service and support to Ball State, excelled in their professions or served their communities for great distinction, Ball State’s Alumni Association presents the Ball State Alumni Awards each year after considering every nomination.
This year, the Alumni Association awarded 13 alumni for their service and achievements.
Distinguished Alumni Award
Hollis Hughes, ’65 MA ’72
A devoted trustee for 28 years, Hollis’s leadership and dedication were recognized with the prestigious President’s Medal of Distinction in 2017. His retirement from the trustee board was commemorated with the naming of Hollis E. Hughes Jr. Assembly Hall in the Alumni Center, a testament to his enduring legacy. Hollis’s impact goes beyond professional achievements. As a mentor to students and alumni, he exemplifies the ideals of giving back and fostering a sense of community. His numerous accolades, including the BSUAA Benny Award and the Sagamore of the Wabash, reflect his unwavering dedication and contributions.

John Worthen
Dr. Worthen, Ball State University’s 11th president from 1984 to 2000, remains a steadfast advocate for the institution. Under his leadership, Ball State became known as a premier teaching university, especially capitalizing on the early use of computer and visual technology to enhance instruction. His involvement spans various giving societies and volunteer roles, including serving on campaign committees and boards. Active in the Muncie community, he contributes to multiple organizations. His ongoing dedication solidifies his status as a cherished member of the Ball State community.

Michele Musson, ’06 MBA ’07
Michele’s dedication to Ball State University spans from her student days to her impressive 18-year post-graduation involvement. As an active member of the Alumni Council from 2015 to 2024, including executive committee roles, Michele’s contributions are far-reaching. Her establishment of the Musson Family Scholarship in 2021 underscores her commitment to fostering future generations. Michele’s engagement extends to hosting Ball State corporate events, serving as a Homecoming Royalty Judge, and participating in various alumni activities, showcasing her deep-rooted connection to her alma mater.
Cory Spaulding, ’06 MBA ’09
Cory epitomizes the dedicated and passionate spirit of a Ball State alumnus. His unwavering commitment to the university and its alumni association has spanned over 15 years, marked by invaluable contributions and impactful initiatives. As a driving force behind the establishment of the Young Alumni Council, Cory’s visionary leadership and strategic acumen were instrumental in creating a platform for meaningful engagement with the newest generation of alumni, ensuring a lifelong connection with their alma mater. Cory’s involvement extends beyond the Young Alumni Council; he has served on the Alumni Council for five years, actively contributes to the MBA Advisory Board, and plays a pivotal role in the “Our Call to Beneficence” Campaign Advisory Council.
Holly Stults, ’89
Holly Stults, a pivotal figure in Ball State University’s arts community, has left a lasting mark through her unwavering dedication and passion. Serving on the BSUAA Alumni Board for 8 years and actively participating in crucial committees, Holly’s advocacy for scholarships and the arts has been instrumental. As a pioneering graduate of the Dance major, she has championed arts initiatives, contributing significantly to the upcoming Performing Arts Center’s realization.
Nick Zuniga, ’04
Nick exemplifies a remarkable journey of engagement with the Ball State Alumni Association, starting as a student on the Homecoming Steering Committee in the early 2000s and continuing his involvement ever since. He embodies the concept of successful “pipeline development,” seamlessly transitioning from a student contributor to a dedicated alumnus. During his impressive 13-year tenure on the Alumni Council, Nick served with distinction, culminating in his role on the Executive Committee as the Treasurer. His deep understanding of engagement goals and unwavering advocacy for Ball State’s mission have made him an invaluable asset to the university community. Nick consistently brought fresh ideas to the table, contributing to the Foundation’s ongoing success.

Katrin Klingenberg, MAR ’96
Katrin is a 1996 graduate of Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning. After obtaining her Master of Architecture degree, she gained extensive experience at renowned architecture firms in Chicago before founding her own design-build firm. In 2007, Klingenberg co-founded and became co-executive director of the Passive House Institute US (Phius), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting high-performance buildings. Today, as the Executive Director of Phius, she oversees a professional team, manages a substantial budget, and champions environmentally-responsible design. Klingenberg’s commitment to human-focused, environment-centered design has earned her accolades, including the Woman in Sustainability Leadership Award in 2015 and selection for the Global Ambassador Program of Vital Voices in 2017. She is a sought-after speaker and author, contributing expertise to publications by Wiley, Elsevier, and Springer. Through her leadership and contributions, Klingenberg has propelled Phius into a recognized authority in low-energy, high-comfort building design and certification, carrying forward Ball State’s legacy of environmentally-conscious design.

Kelsie Clayton, ’21 (CSH)
Kelsie exemplifies professional excellence and community service. She currently works as the Communications and Community Outreach Officer at the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office. She is the first female to hold this position in Indiana and the youngest public servant in this position in the country. Her dedication to Ball State is evident through her active role on the Young Alumni Council, contributing to capital campaigns, Homecoming events, and organizing Cocktails with Cardinals gatherings. Her involvement extends to the Code Red Dance Team, where she provides financial support and mentorship. Kelsie was an Indiana Pacemate dancer for the 2021-22 season, and currently coaches the Westfield High School Dance Team. In 2023, she served as a panelist for mock interviews, helping dancers prepare for professional careers. Kelsie also enriches the educational experience of Legal Studies students by arranging interactions with attorneys and professionals from her workplace.
Jessica Ervin-Eickhoff, ’15 (CFA)
Jessica began her journey at Ball State University, earning a BFA in Acting and graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her passion for theatre was evident as she excelled academically, served as a Teaching Assistant, and contributed to Busted Space Theatre Company, in addition to roles in productions such as Romeo and Juliet, The Water Station, and The Skriker. Returning as a guest artist, she collaborated on the acclaimed production Frankenstein as part of Indiana’s OneStory initiative and continues to mentor alumni in Chicago. An ensemble member at Rivendell Theatre, Jessica earned acclaim for roles like Annie in Motherhouse which won Joseph Jefferson Awards for Best Ensemble and Best New Play. Her versatile talent extends beyond the stage to screen appearances in Chicago Fire (NBC) and films like Princess Cyd and Provo. With a portfolio including collaborations with Goodman Theatre, A Red Orchid Theatre, and Off-Broadway, Jessica’s journey showcases the transformative power of theatre from her alma mater, leaving a lasting impact on audiences and her artistic collaborators.
Raymond Garcia, ’16 (CCIM)
Raymond A. Garcia is a Communications Specialist for the American Library Association, advocating for library professionals and the library’s role in enhancing learning and ensuring access to information for all. In October 2023, Garcia was selected as a rising public relations star by the Publicity Club of Chicago, where he was honored as part of the prestigious 30 Under 30 group at the 65th Annual Golden Trumpet Awards. Since 2020, Garcia has served on the Auxiliary Board of Lincoln Park Zoo. The board works to support the zoo by raising funds to preserve a free experience for the community and for animal conservation. During his time on the board, Garcia has co-chaired the “Spooky Zoo” community event, which creates a safe Halloween environment for children across the Chicago area and most recently co-chaired the spring 2024 “Zoo-ologie” gala, which also coincided with the board’s 40th anniversary year. With a diverse array of experiences, Garcia’ journey reflects a steadfast commitment to excellence and service. At the helm of the Ball State Chicago Alumni Club, Garcia has reinvigorated alumni engagement and fostered a sense of pride among BSU graduates. Garcia’s proactive approach include organizing volunteer opportunities and social events, cultivating a vibrant community where alumni can connect and thrive.
Bryan Kubel, ’16 (MCOB)
As a member of the Ball State Young Alumni Council since 2023, Bryan’s leadership has been exemplary. Currently sitting on the Executive Board of the council, and previously serving as Chair for the Student Engagement Committee, Bryan actively contributes to the council’s initiatives, volunteering extensively despite living out of state. In addition, Bryan has served as a mentor to students within the Miller College of Business during both the spring and fall semesters for the last several years, sharing his advice and wisdom he has learned in his eight years post-graduation. In his role as Senior Partnership Manager for Visit Milwaukee, Bryan has significantly expanded the organization’s network of community partners, increasing partnerships by 70% from a pandemic low in 2021 to record highs in 2024. He has also developed an inclusive partnership strategy, supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion businesses in the Milwaukee area. Beyond his professional achievements, Bryan serves his community by sitting on the boards of the Walker’s Point Association and the I-794 Lake Interchange Stakeholder Advisory Committee, creating lasting impact and influencing development projects that honor his community’s history and vision. Bryan is a proud Milwaukeean and a proud Ball State Cardinal.
Kevin Miller, ’15 MAR ’17 (CAP)
Kevin is a committed ambassador, advancing the field and mentoring future designers. Kevin excelled in digital design during his Master’s, later becoming a guest lecturer at the College of Architecture and Planning. He generously supports the Muncie Makes Lab, reflecting his dedication to innovative education. He founded a volunteer organization that leads community projects benefiting organizations like Fort McHenry National Monument and BARCS Animal Shelter, reflecting his commitment to service. Outside of the office, Kevin sits as a co-chair and Vice President for two different Baltimore design organizations, respectively. Kevin’s advocacy for computational design positioned him as a thought leader, speaking at conferences. Beyond architecture, Kevin self-published a children’s book and actively creates digital art displayed locally. His work on Morgan State University’s Tyler Hall earned acclaim in Architectural Record, with numerous awards.
Samantha Phillips, ’17 (COH)
A board-certified Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Samantha is renowned for her compassion and excellence in healthcare. With a Master of Science in Nursing Education, a Post-Masters AGACNP, and diverse clinical experience, including emergency medicine and helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), she excels in providing complex care in challenging environments. Samantha graduated from Ball States School of Nursing in 2017 and was the nursing class president. Samantha went on to work in both emergency departments and ICU settings of large urban teaching facilities. She then worked for nearly four years as a Certified Flight Registered Nurse with Air Methods in Denver, Colorado, delivering exceptional care to critically ill and injured patients in both rotor-wing and fixed-wing aircraft settings. She recently was selected to be the Fall 2024 Adult Critical Care APP Fellow at IU Health Methodist and will be rotating through various critical care settings providing care as a nurse practitioner. During the COVDI-19 pandemic, she worked tirelessly in New York City, earning numerous awards for her resilience and commitment. Committed to education, Samantha pursues further specialization and contributes to nursing initiatives as a peer-reviewer and author. Her dedication extends to mentoring future healthcare professionals and volunteering in rural EMS programs and community health fairs.
