{"id":9728,"date":"2016-09-01T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bsuenglish.wordpress.com\/?p=9728"},"modified":"2018-11-26T13:34:20","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T18:34:20","slug":"emily-mack-on-interning-at-the-indiana-writers-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/english\/blog\/2016\/09\/01\/emily-mack-on-interning-at-the-indiana-writers-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Emily Mack on Interning at the Indiana Writers Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Ball State University junior education major Emily Mack describes her phenomenal summer internship through the Indiana Writers Center where she worked with children to help them sharpen their writing skills.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This summer I had the opportunity to intern for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indianawriters.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Writers Center<\/a>, helping to teach creative writing to 3 different groups:\u00a0 a pack of brutally honest, rowdy, affectionate 1st-3rd graders and two classes of funny, guarded, intelligent, bilingual high school students. In a mere seven weeks, almost 300 student writers ages 5-18 from across Indiana produced pages upon pages of funny, thought-provoking, gut-wrenching poems and mini-memoirs.<a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/08\/photo-1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-9740 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/08\/photo-1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Bryson and Emily\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095639\/photo-1.jpg 1296w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095639\/photo-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095639\/photo-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095639\/photo-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095639\/photo-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095639\/photo-1-700x700.jpg 700w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095639\/photo-1-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">I believe everyone has an innate desire to be known and to connect with others. Storytelling has always been about sharing a connection. In meeting these kids where they are&#8211;embracing them as the wiggly, imaginative, funny, vulnerable, intelligent kids they are&#8211;we enable them to share their stories and be known by all who will read them. \u00a0The best parts of this experience were getting out of my own bubble, being able to put what I\u2019m learning about diversity and teaching into action, and being trusted with these stories.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">One day Bryson, a 7-year-old at Saint Florian, walked into class, pointed at me, and said, \u201cI want to write with you today!\u201d \u00a0I promised I would and went around the classroom to greet other students and pass out sheets of paper. \u00a0He kept staring at me and patting the empty chair be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">side him until I sat by him. \u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The older kids were spending the day writing about #blacklivesmatter. For the youngest group, we\u2019d modified it to ask them about a time that someone made them feel good or bad about who t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">hey a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">re. \u00a0I asked Bryson which kind of experience he wanted to write about. \u00a0He sai<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/08\/photo-2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-9741 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/08\/photo-2.jpg?w=225\" alt=\"Bryson Drawing\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095638\/photo-2.jpg 726w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095638\/photo-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/08\/10095638\/photo-2-525x700.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">d, \u201cIt made me feel good when the lady gave me a flower to put on my grandmother\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> grave. I don\u2019t remember who she was.\u201d \u00a0I was taken aback and asked him if I could write th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">at down. He went on to describe in great detail, with only a few prompti<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">ng<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\/clarifi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">cation questions to guide him, that years before he was born, his maternal gr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">andmother <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">was mugged and shot. The lady who gave him the flower was his mom\u2019s best friend, Lindsey, who was tall and nice. \u00a0He was sad that it happened, but he\u2019s happy now because he can still feel his grandmother in his heart. I was completely floored that a second grader was able to tell a story about violence and racism with such honesty, innocence, and ho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">pe. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400\">If I were to boil this experience down to one major takeaway, it would be this: in order to be a good <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">teacher, I have to first be willing to learn from my students. I learned about my high school students\u2019 lives as they exchanged Pokemon Go tips, soccer scores and stories of their best and worst games, and satirical jokes and heart-wrenching stories about their experience as Latino immigrants. The younger ones shared stories of everything from aliens, unico<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">rns, and their favorite toys to bullying, divorce, and transitioning stepfamilies. As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indianawriters.org\/pages\/staff\" target=\"_blank\">Barb<\/a>, director of the Indiana Writers Center and one<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> of the leaders of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indianawriters.org\/pages\/youth-summer-programs\" target=\"_blank\">this program<\/a> always says, \u201cIt is a privilege to be trusted with someone\u2019s story.\u201d I\u2019d consider this internship not just for people who want to teach, but for people who are willing to learn from some incredible young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The 2016 &#8220;Building a Rainbow&#8221; project book can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Remember-Indianapolis-Youth-Write-about\/dp\/0996743820\/\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ball State University junior education major Emily Mack describes her phenomenal summer internship through the Indiana Writers Center where she worked with children to help them sharpen their writing skills.
