They often dedicate a great deal of meditation to their pedagogy, and write on it as well. In her essay \u201cThe Story Problem: 10 Thoughts on Academia\u2019s Novel Crisis\u201d at <em>The Millions.com<\/em>, Professor Cathy Day discusses how fiction writing is taught at the university level\u2014the short story versus the novel. Here is an excerpt of the essay:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Typically, workshops prescribe. Here\u2019s what\u2019s not working. Here\u2019s what I had a problem with. Somebody&#8230;has to step up and change the default setting, to frame the conversation so that big things can be brought to the table and discussed meaningfully.<\/p>\n<p>But how to you do that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You can read the whole essay <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2011\/01\/the-story-problem-10-thoughts-on-academias-novel-crisis.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You could say Professor Day has been trying to change the &#8220;default setting&#8221; of her fiction writing classes here at Ball State.
