Since we\u2019re approaching the end of Spring semester, it\u2019s time to hear what the English public relations interns have to say! Today,\u00a0Jeff tells us about his experiences in the Writers’ Community — from freshman year to\u00a0junior year.<\/em><\/p>\n

If you’re interested in attending Writers’ Community<\/strong>, it takes place during the Fall and Spring. Meetings are from 8:00 – 9:00 PM on Wednesdays<\/strong> in Robert Bell’s Writing Center<\/a> (RB 291)<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Looking back, I guess I\u2019d describe the majority of my freshman year as \u201ccomfortable.\u201d\u00a0After acclimating to college life, I was meeting new people, spending more time outside my dorm than inside, and writing more often<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0my second semester rolled around, I felt confident enough to attend a Writers\u2019 Community meeting. And why wouldn’t I? In high school, I was head tutor of the writing lab, I edited too many narrative essays to count, and people voted me \u201cMost Likely to Write a Novel.”<\/p>\n

Writers\u2019 Community would\u00a0be old hat, or at least that\u2019s what I told myself. But I didn\u2019t make a single contribution to\u00a0the writing workshop that night. Making proper small talk proved impossible. I spent more time wiping the sweat from my hands than looking people in the eye.<\/p>\n

As an icebreaker, we all introduced ourselves and said who our favorite authors were.\u00a0Most of the people were juniors and seniors, and they all said names like \u201cRobert Creeley,\u201d \u201cPatricia Smith,\u201d and \u201cJoan Didion.\u201d\u00a0They were writers I\u2019d never heard of.\u00a0And since I didn’t bother looking up the names, I wouldn’t read any of their work\u00a0until I took classes with professors like Debbie Mix and Todd McKinney.<\/p>\n

In a few years, I\u2019d feel absurd for thinking a name like Joan Didion was obscure, and I\u2019d kick myself for not reading certain texts sooner.\u00a0That night, sitting in front of those talented English majors, I searched my mind for an author who\u00a0would make me look well-read and settled for, \u201cUhh\u2026Stephen King?\u201d<\/p>\n

The most unfortunate part of this story isn\u2019t\u00a0my embarrassment (I\u2019m used to looking like a dork at this point). I just regret letting my\u00a0embarrassment prevent me from\u00a0getting closer to the people involved in WC. If I wasn\u2019t so hard on myself, my fellow writers could have given me the reassurance I needed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But I was so sure everyone would remember my face \u2013 and my lack of literary know-how. So I didn\u2019t bother coming to the second meeting that semester. Or the third.<\/p>\n

Even though I knew<\/em> I was overreacting,\u00a0I also knew I held a disconcerting arrogance beneath my insecurity. If I could just meet the right people, attend enough English-related events, and build a positive reputation, I could become president of Writers\u2019 Community before I graduated. But that wouldn’t happen if I wasn’t\u00a0literary\u00a0<\/em>enough (whatever that means).<\/p>\n

Part of me wanted to\u00a0secure the position because it would prove\u00a0I’d made good use of my time at BSU. The other part of me just thought “Writers’ Community President” sounded like a cool title.<\/p>\n

\n

Two years have passed since then, and it’s my last week as a junior. Once the semester ends, I’ll be president of Writers’ Community. It\u2019s my responsibility\u00a0to host meetings, organize readings, and delegate work\u00a0to the vice president and officers.<\/p>\n

So much has changed in a short amount of time. Writers\u2019 Community is not a chance\u00a0to show off my writing anymore \u2013 it\u2019s a chance to create a safe space for incoming writers. It’s a spotlight for undiscovered talent. It’s a place to make bad puns and nerd out about literature.<\/p>\n

\n

I want to provide students with the reassurance\u00a0I\u00a0<\/em>needed a few years ago; I want to tell them that being a writer \u2013 or really any artist \u2013 is not about getting better over time, but finding more reasons to do what you love. Every time we meet in RB 291, I find another reason.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Writing about my experiences doesn\u2019t make them feel any less surreal, though. Each year has more packed into it (bills, internships, job searches), but that doesn\u2019t stop time from going faster and faster. I thought I\u2019d have it figured out by now, but I keep uncovering more about myself: who I can be, who I want to be, who I am. And my learning will not end after senior year.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0if I’d stayed sedentary and hadn\u2019t become involved? That thought terrifies me. If I hadn’t\u00a0embarrassed myself at that first WC meeting, I wouldn\u2019t be who I am now.\u00a0My arrogance is gone, replaced by a humility that only three years of\u00a0constructive criticism can provide.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t get where I am because I deserve it more than anyone else, but because my friends and faculty told me about the opportunities available to BSU students<\/strong>. It only seems right to tell every Writers\u2019 Community member about those opportunities<\/a> \u2013 to tell them about all there is to learn in the English department. If I can manage that, maybe it will be obvious how grateful I really am.<\/p>\n
