Some bodies are accepted as &#8220;beautiful,&#8221; while others aren&#8217;t. Some\u00a0injuries can change a person&#8217;s life.\u00a0Some industries see the body as a commodity.<\/p>\n<p>Following their\u00a0presentations, you&#8217;ll have time to ask questions, learn about other upcoming events, and mingle. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">We hope to see lots of people there: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">undergraduates, graduate students, and <strong>all faculty<\/strong><\/span>!<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #800000\">A little bit about the speakers<\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>Dr. Adam Beach<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/adam-beach.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5100\" src=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/adam-beach.jpg\" alt=\"Adam Beach\" width=\"147\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/03\/10095826\/adam-beach.jpg 467w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/03\/10095826\/adam-beach-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He&#8217;s chair of the English department.<\/li>\n<li>He mostly teaches courses that revolve around issues of nationalism, colonialism, slavery, and literary theory.<\/li>\n<li>His essays have appeared in <span style=\"color: #800000\"><em><a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/journals\/eighteenth-century_studies\/v046\/46.3.beach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eighteenth-Century Studies<\/a>, <a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"http:\/\/ecl.dukejournals.org\/content\/28\/3\/1.full.pdf+html?sid=9c989525-29a0-4cb8-b1f3-81d641638f05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eighteenth-Century Life<\/a><\/em>,<\/span> and other academic journals. He&#8217;s also recently co-edited (with Srividha Swaminathan) a collection entitled <span style=\"color: #800000\"><a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Invoking-Eighteenth-Century-Imagination-Literature-Eighteenth\/dp\/1409469980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Invoking Slavery in the Eighteenth-Century Imagination<\/em><\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">Deborah Mix\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/debbie-mix.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5099\" src=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/debbie-mix.jpg?w=252\" alt=\"Debbie Mix\" width=\"149\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/03\/10095826\/debbie-mix.jpg 440w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/03\/10095826\/debbie-mix-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She&#8217;s an associate professor who teaches courses in 20th century American literature and US ethnic literature.<\/li>\n<li>In 2007, she published <em><span style=\"color: #800000\"><a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uiowapress.org\/books\/2007-fall\/mixavoc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;A Vocabulary of Thinking&#8221;:\u00a0Gertrude Stein and Contemporary North American Women&#8217;s Innovative Writing<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/em>She also had her essay (&#8220;Gertrude Stein&#8217;s Currency&#8221;) published in <span style=\"color: #800000\"><a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ashgate.com\/default.aspx?page=637&amp;calcTitle=1&amp;isbn=9780754666103&amp;lang=cy-GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Modernist Star Maps<\/em><\/a><\/span> in 2010<b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>Joyce Huff<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/joyce-huff.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5102\" src=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/joyce-huff.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Joyce Huff\" width=\"179\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/03\/10095825\/joyce-huff.jpg 304w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/03\/10095825\/joyce-huff-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She earned her Ph.D. in English at George Washington University, and she specializes in Victorian literature. Her research explores the\u00a0representation of stigmatized human bodies.<\/li>\n<li>Her\u00a0poem, <span style=\"color: #800000\"><a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/180\/097.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Hymn of a Fat Woman&#8221;<\/a><\/span> was selected for the Library of Congress&#8217; Poetry 180 Project.<\/li>\n<li>She&#8217;ll be running Ball State&#8217;s academic journal next year: <span style=\"color: #800000\"><em><a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"http:\/\/bsu.edu\/dlr\/submit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Literature Review<\/a><\/em><\/span>.
