Supervised by me, the Assistant Chair of Operations, they coordinated the internal and external communication needs of the department.<\/p>\n<p>Let me explain to you their specific duties as members of the team and what they accomplished in a relatively short amount of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> They worked 10 hours a week. Their first responsibility was to complete office tasks. Then they were ALL MINE. (evil laugh)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:center\">Daniel Brount<\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#800000\">Daniel was our InDesign guru.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He also posted events\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.wordpress.com\/calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Google Calendar on the department blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say I get an email from a faculty member that she is bringing a speaker on October 13. Can we put it on the calendar and make a poster?<\/p>\n<p>Daniel starts that process.<\/p>\n<p>He also created our new blog banner, our new social media avatars, as well as promotional materials and handouts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.979608172053171.1073741829.119015841445746&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\">Stars to Steer By posters<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/-\/media\/WWW\/DepartmentalContent\/English\/pdfs\/Professional%20Experience%20Checklist%20Links.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Professional Experience Checklist<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B_8CrL2twyw0MUk1cHdYQWNXVVk\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">Career Week poster.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Like the poster that launched our <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B_8CrL2twyw0Nk1DSFJocXRVUnc\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">#bsuenglish hashtag campaign<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He had a vision for the &#8220;look&#8221; of our\u00a0online presence that was consistent, clean, cohesive, welcoming. Some folks call this &#8220;branding,&#8221; and well, it made people think that we had our s*** together.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel also took pictures at a lot of our events and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1004898286190826.1073741832.119015841445746&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\"> created FB photo albums<\/a> (which we then repurposed for our alumni e-newsletter).<\/p>\n<p>Yes, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ballstateuniversityalumni.com\/email\/ReVision\/ReVisionNewsletter1214.html\" target=\"_blank\">our first ever e-newsletter<\/a>. He worked with Alumni Services to design the header and navigation buttons, and he worked with me to organize and edit\u00a0the content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NaNo Project:<\/strong>\u00a0Then there&#8217;s this: Daniel decided we needed to organize a NaNoWriMo competition. All I had to do was book a room for Weekly Write-Ins, but Daniel and the other interns did everything else. Daniel figured out how to publicize the event internally and externally.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sort of heartbroken, <strong>but not surprised,<\/strong> that he&#8217;s leaving us to take over as the Managing Editor of the Ball State Daily News.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Daniel.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:center\">Lauren Lutz<strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#800000\">Lauren was our social media guru.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That faculty member who&#8217;s bringing the speaker on October 13? Lauren uses social media to promote the event. Tweets, FB posts, FB events. (It&#8217;s hard to get people&#8217;s attention these days.)<\/p>\n<p>She also sent out gentle reminders about registration and other departmental happenings, like dissertation defenses.<\/p>\n<p>She promoted events across campus that were of interest to English department faculty and students: symposiums, speakers, films, and local cultural events. This built cross-disciplinary and &#8220;town-and-gown&#8221; relationships. Because we shared their stuff, they shared our stuff.<\/p>\n<p>The English department&#8217;s many good works are now visible outside of Robert Bell, and that&#8217;s a very good thing.\u00a0<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lauren interacted with students and faculty, liking, favoriting, and retweeting. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/bsuenglish\" target=\"_blank\">weekly Storifies <\/a>are a thing of beauty (and often great comedy).<\/p>\n<p><strong>NaNo Project:<\/strong>\u00a0Lauren helped Daniel with publicity and figured out how to engage current students and alums.<\/p>\n<p><b>She changed the voice and persona of our online presence.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Push through it, everyone! <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/phGWhcwyGH\">pic.twitter.com\/phGWhcwyGH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ball State English (@bsuenglish) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bsuenglish\/status\/542861350913847296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 11, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>A former student told me last year that she thought of our department&#8217;s voice like a megaphone, and its persona was a little imposing. Lauren changed that. Now, our persona is both smart but also funny and approachable.<\/p>\n<p>I feel like Lauren&#8217;s work has changed how people feel about the department, but also how they feel about themselves as English majors.<\/p>\n<p>Something you need to understand about our department is that there is pretty much nowhere for students to hang out except on the floor in the hallways. And they did.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Wednesdays: <em>Events<\/em> or\u00a0<\/b><b><i>Recommended Reads Day<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Event promotion or Recommended Reads post on blog, which we promoted on social media.<\/li>\n<li>Honestly, we had so many events, we didn&#8217;t do any RR&#8217;s this semester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Thursdays:<\/b> <b><i>Throw-back Thursdays: <\/i><\/b>A Trip Through Our Archives<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>No blog post<\/em><\/li>\n<li>We repurposed our extensive archive, trying to &#8220;piggy back&#8221; on upcoming events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Fridays: <\/b>\u00a0<b><i>A week of #bsuenglish via Storify<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Post Storify to blog and promote on social media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My\u00a0interns didn&#8217;t really <em>write<\/em>\u00a0much for the blog. We asked others to do the writing, and then Becca formatted and made it reader friendly.<\/p>\n<p>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/17\/a-day-as-an-intern-whittley-lewis\/\" target=\"_blank\">this post<\/a> from a few years ago to <a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/24\/senior-rebecca-haynes-secures-job-at-ford-meter-box-inc\/\" target=\"_blank\">one that Becca worked on<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She understood intuitively what needed to be done with submissions, that writing for the web is different from writing for the page. It was an enormous relief to me that I didn&#8217;t have to insert subheads and hyperlinks and colors and pulled quotes and images or add good intros and conclusions&#8211;all the things that make blog posts more readable and share-able.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NaNo Project:<\/strong>\u00a0Becca found a WordPress plugin that imported all the competitors&#8217; NaNo widgets so that everyone competing could see where they stood in relation to the other competitors. <a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.wordpress.com\/nanowrimo-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">Check out the page! <\/a>20+ people, including visiting writer Michael Poore.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This made me so happy. My interns took the initiative to make something happen. Everyone chipped in to make it work. They took ownership and that\u2019s wonderful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The blog is our hub, and Becca managed it well. I don&#8217;t have to explain things to her. She&#8217;s seen &#8220;behind the curtain&#8221; and knows a great deal.<\/p>\n<p>Thank god she is returning next semester, because otherwise, I&#8217;d be in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Taylor.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:center\">What they accomplished!<\/h2>\n<p><strong>This semester, they increased our department&#8217;s &#8216;reach&#8217; by\u00a0740 people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each week during our meeting, we&#8217;d begin by checking our stats. Between July 28,2014 and December 9, 2014:<\/p>\n<p><strong>They added:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>99 Facebook page likes<\/li>\n<li>166 Twitter followers<\/li>\n<li>25 blog subscribers<\/li>\n<li>450 weekly page views (350 a day to 800)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Made the department (achievements, events, etc.) more visible by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>consistent use of social media and blog to promote events<\/li>\n<li>better, more eye-catching posters<\/li>\n<li>use of calendars&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.wordpress.com\/calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\">internal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/calendar\/calendars\/academics\/english\" target=\"_blank\">external<\/a>. Now there&#8217;s always a place (besides your inbox) where you can go to see what\u2019s happening in the department.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ballstateuniversityalumni.com\/email\/ReVision\/ReVisionNewsletter1214.html\">first e-newsletter<\/a>, <i>(Re)Vision<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Increased attendance at events. <\/strong>Most were standing room only.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alumni Outreach. <\/strong>They helped me to build\u00a0a system whereby we can interact with alums and gain from their wisdom.\u00a0This benefits the current students and demonstrates that\u00a0we have positive career outcomes and all that jazz.<\/p>\n<p>This team has\u00a0improved the <strong>student experience<\/strong> in measurable ways, and maybe that means that 5, 10, 20 years down the road, they\u2019ll remember us well.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:center\">The reason I&#8217;ve written all this out<\/h2>\n<p>I want my new team (Taylor Imus, Jeff Owens, Emily Griffis, and Taylor Wicker) to see what they&#8217;ll be doing.<\/p>\n<p>I want people to understand that <em>I didn&#8217;t do this work<\/em>. They did.
