In the latest installment of our \u201cGood News\u201d series, The Ball State English Department\u00a0highlights the accomplishments of the department\u2019s graduate students and faculty during the Fall 2013 semester:<\/ins><\/i><\/p>\n

Amit Baishya <\/strong>wrote an article titled “The Act of Watching with One’s One Eyes: ‘Strange Recognitions’ in Siddhartha Deb’s An Outline of the Republic,” which is forthcoming in Interventions: International Journal for Postcolonial Studies<\/i><\/a>. Another article by Baishya<\/strong> titled \u201cThe \u2018secret killings\u2019 of Assam in literature\u201d was published in November in Himal Southasian<\/i>. He also has an article named “Close Encounters of the Real Kind: the Avatars of Terror in Two Contemporary Assamese Short Stories” that has been accepted for publication in a collected edition of essays titled Frames of Culture<\/i>. Routledge will publish the collection in November 2014.<\/p>\n

Baishya<\/strong> was also invited to deliver a presentation titled “Countryless Countries: the Poetics of No-Man’s Zones in Contemporary Militant Fictions” at the Materialism and the Colony colloquium<\/a> at Bard College at Simon’s Rock on May 23, 2013. In addition, he is co-organizing a seminar titled “Differential Capital” at the American Comparative Literature Association Conference<\/a> at New York University in March 2014.<\/ins><\/p>\n

Doctoral student Nicki\u00a0Litherland <\/b> Baker\u2019s <\/strong>article \u201c\u2019Get It off My Stack\u2019: Teachers\u2019 Tools for Grading Papers\u201d is in press, to be published in Assessing Writing<\/i>. The paper was first presented at the national College English Association Conference<\/a> in Savannah, Georgia last April. Litherland\u00a0<\/b>Baker<\/strong> also presented her paper \u201cStudents’ Own Engagement with Technology as Their Research Focus\u201d at the Indiana Teachers of Writing conference held in Noblesville, Indiana in September. In addition, at the Indiana College English Association Conference<\/a> in Evansville, which took place in October, she presented \u201cCollege Composition and the Five-Paragraph Essay: An Example of Academic Othering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam R. Beach<\/strong> co-edited (with Srividhya Swaminathan) Invoking Slavery in the Eighteenth-Century British Imagination<\/i>, and the book<\/a> was published by Ashgate in July 2013.\u00a0 Beach\u2019s<\/strong> essay \u201cThe Good-Treatment Debate, Comparative Slave Studies, and the \u2018Adventures\u2019 of T.S.,\u201d <\/b>is included in the volume. Beach<\/strong> also published \u201cAfrican Slaves, English Slave Narratives, and Early Modern Morocco\u201d in Eighteenth Century Studies<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Peter Davis\u2019s<\/strong> third book, TINA<\/i>, came out from Bloof Books<\/a> in 2013. It has received good reviews in Fanzine<\/i> and H_ngm_n<\/i>.\u00a0A poem from TINA<\/i> was featured at Versedaily<\/a>. He has done a fair amount of readings this semester for TINA<\/i>, most notably at the KGB reading series, The New School, Manchester University, and Illinois State University. He is doing a workshop and reading at Columbia College in Chicago in February.\u00a0Davis<\/strong> is also featured in a new anthology, The Incredible Sestina Anthology<\/i><\/a>, which was edited by Daniel Nester.<\/p>\n

Cathy Day<\/strong> published a short story, \u201cMr. Jenny Perdido\u201d in Volume 9<\/a> of Pank Magazine <\/i>in <\/i>2013. She also received a grant called \u201cPublishing + BSU Students\u201d that provided funds for 20 students to participate in the 40th annual Midwest Writers Workshop<\/a> from July 25-27 last summer. It is a Discovery Award Grant given by the Discovery Group<\/a> of Muncie, Indiana in 2013 for $15,398. <\/ins>Click here<\/a> to read the department\u2019s blog post about her involvement in the event.<\/p>\n

Day<\/strong> also wrote a guest post<\/a> for the Indiana University Press blog called \u201cThe Book Behind the Old Washington Street Festival\u201d on August 30, 2013. She wrote it in an effort to publicize her neighborhood\u2019s annual historical festival and the work of Muncie author Emily Kimbrough.<\/p>\n

Frank Felsenstein<\/strong> is the joint author (with John Straw, Katharine Leigh, and James Connolly) of “Reading Library Records: Constructing and Using the What Middletown Read Database,” which has appeared as a chapter in Libraries and the Reading Public in Twentieth-Century America<\/i><\/a>, published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2013. The chapter is based on a team presentation at the 2010 conference, “Libraries in the History of Print Culture,” which is sponsored every five years by the American Library Association. Given the rarity of their survival, the editors of the volume describe the discovery of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century circulation records of the Muncie Public Library as “an extraordinary find.” Information<\/a> about the project and digitized records<\/a> can be accessed through Ball State\u2019s website. The freely accessible database is now being regularly employed both by researchers and by teachers and students across the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n

Robert D. Habich<\/strong> published the chapter \u201cBiography\u201d in Ralph Waldo Emerson in Context<\/i><\/a> with Cambridge University Press, as well as the online research guide \u201cRalph Waldo Emerson\u201d in Oxford Bibliographies in American Literature<\/i><\/a> <\/i>with Oxford University Press. <\/i>His review of The Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson<\/i>, vol. 10, appeared in the New England Quarterly<\/i><\/a> in September, and his review of “Not Altogether Human”: Pantheism and the Dark Nature of the American Renaissance<\/i> by Richard Hardack was published in the Journal of American History<\/i><\/a> in June.\u00a0Habich<\/strong> is completing a two-year term as president of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society.<\/p>\n

Darolyn Jones<\/strong> was awarded the Outstanding Proposal Submission at the Diversity and Inclusivity Teaching and Research Symposium at Indiana University Southeast on October 13. She was also awarded the university-wide Excellence in Teaching (EXIT)<\/a> award for her project \u201cRethinking Children\u2019s Literature: Reading for Change\u201d at Ball State University in 2013.<\/p>\n

Jones\u2019s<\/strong> work with the Indiana Writers Center<\/a> has been featured<\/a> on the Ball State University website since October. Also, she was featured in an article titled \u201cTTK: Fight for your Writers\u201d<\/a> <\/b>in an online publication for the Arts in Indiana called Sky Blue Window<\/i> on October 12. A memoir collection she edited along with English department faculty member Liz Whiteacre<\/strong> called Monday Coffee and Other Stories of Mothering Children with Special Needs <\/i><\/a>was released in November.<\/p>\n

Sean Lovelace<\/strong> released a flash fiction collection published by Bateau Press<\/a> titled The Frogs are Incredibly Loud Here<\/i>. It was the winner<\/a> of the 2013 Keel Prize for short fiction. <\/b>Two more of Lovelace\u2019s<\/strong> flash fiction pieces titled “I Roll into a Ball and they Throw me at Derek Jeter” and “Separation” were published in Fall 2013 in Quarter After Eight<\/i><\/a> literary magazine. During the summer of 2013, his flash fiction piece titled “Saturday” was published in Juked<\/i><\/a> magazine.<\/p>\n

Craig O’Hara’s<\/strong> short story “The Corner,” which recently appeared in the North Dakota Quarterly<\/i><\/a>, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.<\/p>\n

Emily Scalzo<\/strong> had three poems, “The End of Childhood,” “The Process of Grief,” and “Comfort Food,” featured in the online literary magazine Dead Snakes<\/i>. Also, her short memoir piece, “Degradation,” was published in the online literary magazine Run to the Roundhouse, Nellie<\/i>.<\/i> \u00a0<\/b>Scalzo\u2019s<\/b> poem, “To Adam,” is forthcoming in February at Deep Water Literary Journal<\/i>, and two poems, “My Reason for College, 2003,” and “Homeless Man, Purdue University,” are forthcoming in April at Eunoia Review<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Trey Strecker <\/strong>reviewed Evan Dara’s Flee<\/i>\u00a0for the TLS: Times Literary Supplement<\/i>\u00a0<\/a>(22 Nov. 2013) and Joseph McElroy’s Cannonball<\/i>\u00a0for the Quarterly Conversation<\/i>\u00a034 (Winter 2014).<\/p>\n

Mary Lou Vercellotti\u2019s<\/strong> article \u201cUse and Accuracy of Verb Complement in English L2 Speech\u201d was published<\/a> in October in the Dutch Journal of Applied Linguistics<\/i>. Also, she had an article published<\/a> in TESOL Quarterly<\/i> titled \u201cExamining the Impact of Self-Correction Notes on Grammatical Accuracy in Speaking\u201d in June. In addition, she <\/b>wrote a chapter<\/a> called \u201cLanguage Acquisition and Language Assessment\u201d in the book The Companion to Language Assessment<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Vercellotti<\/strong> also presented twice at the Second Language Research Forum<\/a> in Utah this November. Her presentations were titled \u201cNot All Clauses are Created Equal: Classifying Grammatical Complexity in ESL Speech\u201d and “Profiles of Noticing in L2 English Learners: Examining Online and Post-production Noticing Moves.”<\/p>\n

Maria Windell\u2019s<\/strong> article titled “Moor, Mulata<\/i>, <\/i>Mulatta: Sentimentalism, Racialization,\u00a0and Benevolent Imperialism in Mary Peabody Mann\u2019s Juanita<\/i>\u201d has been accepted for publication in <\/i>J19:The Journal of Nineteenth-Century Americanists<\/i>, the journal of C19: The Society of Nineteenth-Century Americanists<\/i>.<\/p>\n
