In the latest installment of our \u201cGood News\u201d series, The Ball State English Department <\/i>highlights the accomplishments of the department\u2019s graduate students and faculty during the Spring 2013 semester: <\/i><\/p>\n
Graduate Student Adi Angel<\/b> presented \u201c\u2019She Had Learned to Know Her Body Playing Ball:\u2019 Exploring Representations of the Jewish Mother Through Baseball Fiction\u201d at the PCA\/ACA National Conference<\/a> in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n Angel<\/b> also presented \u201c\u2019She Remembered the Playground Games and the Dawn of her Awareness of Being a Woman\u2019: Exploring Female Masculinity in Silvia Tennenbaum\u2019s Rachel, the Rabbi\u2019s Wife<\/i>\u201d at the NINE: Spring Training Conference on the Historical and Sociological Impact of Baseball in Tempe, AZ. Amit Baishya<\/b> was invited to present a paper titled “Raw Life: ‘Songs’ of Survival in Raktim Sarma’s Borangar Ngang<\/i>” at a colloquium titled \u201cFar from the Nation, Close to the State: Hazy Sovereignty and Anxious Citizenship in India’s Northeast<\/a>” held at Stanford University, March 14 and 15, 2013.<\/p>\n He also presented a paper titled “Country-less Countries: No-Man’s Zones and the Material Realities of Survival in Two Contemporary Assamese Militant Fictions” at a colloquium titled “Materialism and the Colony” at Bard College (MA) on May 23-24, 2013.<\/p>\n Baishya<\/b> co-organized a seminar titled “States of Permanent Warfare in South Asia” at the Annual American Comparative Literature Association Conference<\/a> (ACLA) in Toronto from April 4-7, 2013. He delivered a paper titled “Shock Encounters: Scenarios of the \u2018Inhuman\u2019 in Two Contemporary Assamese Short Stories” at the Conference.<\/b><\/p>\n Graduate student Nicki Litherland Baker<\/b> presented “Getting Them off Your Stack: Teachers\u2019 Tools for Addressing the Paper Load”\u00a0at the 2013 College English Association Conference<\/a> held in\u00a0Savannah, Georgia in April.<\/p>\n Dr. Brent Blackwell<\/b> received the C. Warren Vander Hill Award from the Honors College for outstanding teaching.<\/p>\n Angela Jackson-Brown\u2019s<\/b> novel is slated to be published next spring with WiDo Publishing<\/a>.\u00a0 She also had three poems published in Identity Theory<\/i><\/a> and a poem accepted in Toe Good Poetry<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n This spring, Jill Christman<\/b> was elected to the\u00a0Board of Directors<\/span>\u00a0of The Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) as the Midwest Representative, and will serve a four-year term representing writers and writing programs in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Ontario, and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n This summer, Christman<\/b> will be giving two talks in Ashland, Ohio\u2014one at the\u00a0The River Teeth Conference of Nonfiction<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/i>on Sunday, May 19th<\/sup>\u00a0(\u201cCrafting the Memoir: Carving Questions, Shaping Story, and Juggling the Shifting Roles of Memory, Imagination, and Time\u201d with writers\/editors Joe Mackall and Michael Steinberg) and another at the Ashland MFA summer<\/span>\u00a0residency on Tuesday, July 30th<\/sup>\u00a0(\u201cExercising Brevity: Nonfiction Lessons in Distillation\u201d). On the evening of Thursday, August 1st<\/sup>, Jill will give a reading with her Ashland colleagues, Peter Campion and Ruth Schwartz.<\/p>\n Christman<\/b>\u2019s essay, \u201cBorrowed Babies,\u201d appeared in a special Spring 2013 nonfiction issue of\u00a0Iron Horse Literary Review<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n Elizabeth Dalton\u2019s<\/b> creative nonfiction piece “If Ever You Decide You Should Go” was published by r.kv.ry quarterly literary journal<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n Dalton\u2019s<\/b> interview, “Interview with Elizabeth Dalton” with April Ford was published in r.kv.ry quarterly literary journal<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n Her creative nonfiction piece “Long Hair” was published in All that Glitters: Nonfiction from Sliver of Stone Magazine<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n Professor Cathy Day<\/b> received an immersive learning grant award from the Discovery Group. Her project, “Publishing + BSU Students,” was funded in the amount of $15,398. The project will allow students to intern at and attend the Midwest Writers Workshop in Muncie this summer. To learn more about this project, you can check out her blog at http:\/\/literarycitizenship.com\/2013\/03\/05\/publishing\/<\/span>.<\/p>\n Day <\/b>also recently published an essay at Punchnel’s<\/a> <\/em>about the Flood of 1913 that ravaged the state of Indiana and her hometown a hundred years ago.<\/p>\n Dr. Stephanie Hedge<\/b> won the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award.<\/p>\n Dr. Joyce Huff<\/b> published an essay entitled “‘Fattening’ Literary History” in the Spring 2013 issue of Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body, Weight and Society<\/i><\/a>. <\/i><\/p>\n She also gave a conference paper entitled “Suicide by Fat: Body Worlds<\/i> and the Exhibition of the Fat Corpse” at the annual meeting of the Popular Culture Association<\/i><\/a> in March 2013. Huff<\/b> served as a panelist on a roundtable entitled, “Frank Talk: Difficult Dialogues on Fat and Sex” at that same conference.<\/p>\n Dr. Darolyn Jones<\/b> was awarded the Accessibility Faculty Member of the Year from Ball State University, Office of Disabled Student Development for the 2012-2013 academic school year. Jones was also nominated and selected for the Excellence in Teaching (EXIT) Award from Ball State University.<\/p>\n Jones<\/b> was featured in the Indianapolis Star<\/em>, \u201cInitiative Wants to Collect the City\u2019s Stories,\u201d October 18, 2012 and on Hoosier History Live Radio Show at WICR 88.7, \u201cSharing Memories in Captivating Ways,\u201d January 5, 2013.<\/p>\n She published \u201cSometimes it Sucks, but You Find the Joy: The Joyful Experiences of Mothers of Children with Special Needs,\u201d at the Discursive Constructions of Autism conference at the University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n Jones<\/b> participated in a Ball State University Interactive Simulcast by presenting \u201cStone Soup: Story and Strategies\u201d for faculty at Tikrit University in Iraq.<\/p>\n This May, she presented \u201cPre-enrollment Considerations of Undergraduate Wheelchair Users and their Post-enrollment Transitions,\u201d alongside Christina Blanch, Graduate Assistant at Ball State University, Larry Markle, Director of Disabled Student Development at Ball State University, and Dr. Roger Wessel, Professor of Educational Studies at Ball State University at the Ethnographic and Qualitative Research Conference<\/a> (EQRC), Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio.<\/p>\n Sean Lovelace\u2019s <\/b>chapbook, Velveeta<\/i>, was the winner of the Keel Short Short Fiction Chapbook Contest<\/a>.<\/p>\n Graduate Student Thomas St. Pierre<\/b> presented \u201cThe Combination of Concepts Through Lexical and Syntactic Interplay: The Case of get<\/i> within the Syntactic Frame of Motion\u201d at the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) Conference<\/a> in Dallas, TX.<\/p>\n Carolyn MacKay and Frank Trechsel\u2019s<\/b> article, \u201cA Sketch of Pisaflores Tepehua Phonology\u201d was published in International Journal of American Linguistics<\/i><\/a>. Their article, \u201cTotonac-Tepehua Genetic Relationships\u201d was also accepted for publication by Amerindia<\/i>. MacKay and Trechsel <\/b>also received a NEH- Documenting Endangered Languages Grant.<\/p>\n Dr. Nathan Myers<\/b> won the BSU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Dissertation Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n Craig O\u2019Hara\u2019s <\/b>short story “Hard Work” was accepted for publication in the online literary journal, Bull: Men’s Fiction<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n Also, O\u2019Hara\u2019s<\/b> short story “The Corner” has been accepted for publication in the upcoming North Dakota Quarterly<\/i><\/a> special issue number 78.2 “Going Global: Contemporary International Voices and Visions.”<\/p>\n Graduate Student Katharina Pabst<\/b> presented \u201cCross-Cultural Differences in German and US-American Compliment Exchanges\u201d with Thomas St. Pierre<\/b> at the annual meeting of the American Association for Applied Linguistics<\/a> in Dallas, TX.<\/p>\n Pabst <\/b>also presented \u201cCompliment Response Strategies of US-American Learners of German\u201d at the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages<\/a> in Columbus, OH.<\/p>\n Dr. Rai Peterson <\/b>published \u201cRed, White, and Boyle\u201d in Revue \u00c9lectronique d’\u00c9tudes sur le <\/a><\/i>Monde Anglophone<\/a><\/i>.<\/i>\u00a010:1 (Spring 2013)\u00a0and \u201c\u2019An efficiency, a great beauty\u2019: Sylvia Plath’s Ariel<\/i> Titles. \u00a0Plath Profiles<\/i><\/a> (Spring 2013).<\/p>\n Peterson <\/b>also received an ADVANCE grant for travel to France to research a biography she is writing about Solita Solano, an American expatriate novelist, poet, journalist, and editor who lived in Paris and Le Cannet between 1921 and 1975.<\/p>\n Peterson<\/b> was awarded The Miller College of Business Outstanding Immersive Program Award for 2012 with co-investigator Dr. Russ Wahlers.<\/p>\n Liz Whitacre\u2019s <\/b>chapbook of poetry, Hit the Ground<\/i><\/a>, is now available from Finishing Line <\/a>Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n Graduate student Heather Wilson<\/b> presented \u201cUnderstanding the Process of Writing through Personality Typology\u201d at the 13th<\/sup> Annual Graduate Symposium at Purdue University.<\/p>\n In addition to receiving an ASPiRE Junior Faculty Research Grant from Ball State, Dr. Maria Windell<\/b> accepted a Lillian Gary Taylor Visiting Fellowship in American <\/a>Literature from the University of Virginia<\/a>, funding two months of research at their Albert H. <\/a>Small Special Collections Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n Andrea Powell Wolfe\u2019s <\/b>article,\u00a0\u201cRefiguring La Malinche: Female \u2018Betrayal\u2019 as Cultural <\/a>Negotiation in the Short Stories of Mar\u00eda\u00a0Cristina Mena<\/a>” was accepted by\u00a0Label Me <\/a><\/i>Latina\/<\/a><\/i>o<\/i>.<\/p>\n Wolfe<\/b> was also nominated for two teaching awards this spring: The Excellence in Teaching <\/a>Award<\/a> and The C.
