L., Baker, N. L., Chaney, S. E., Hashimov, E., Imafuji, E. L., McNely, B., Romano, L. (2012). <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=2379120\">A qualitative metasynthesis of activity theory in SIGDOC Proceedings 2001-2011.<\/a> Proceedings from SIGDOC \u201812:\u00a0<i>Proceedings of the 30th annual conference on design of communication<\/i>. New York: ACM.<\/p>\n<p>In October, <strong>Baker<\/strong> presented \u00a0\u201cMultitasking in composition classes: Why and how to calm the thumbs and increase the presence\u201d at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icea.ausrc.org\/\"><i>Indiana College English Association Conference<\/i><\/a> in Valparaiso, IN and received the Best Graduate Paper Award.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Amit Baishya<\/strong> delivered a talk titled &#8220;The Unwatchability of One&#8217;s Own Death: Encounters with the Living Dead in &#8216;Heart of Darkness'&#8221; at Butler University on April 10. He also organized a panel titled &#8220;Visions of Coexistence: Thinking Beyond Violence in Northeast India&#8221; and was a co-organizer of a round table discussion titled &#8220;A History of Violence: Assam&#8217;s Cruel Summer and its Repercussions&#8221; at the 42nd Annual Conference on South Asia held at Madison from Oct. 17-20. Baishya also presented a paper titled &#8220;The Politics of Friendship in Makam&#8221; and &#8220;Violence and its Representation in the Media&#8221; at the panel and the round table.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baishya&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0paper \u201c\u201cCounter me, Rape us\u201d: Bare Life and the Mimicry of the Sovereign\u201d was published in an anthology titled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-s-p.org\/flyers\/Subaltern-Vision--A-Study-in-Postcolonial-Indian-English-Text1-4438-3665-6.htm\"><i>Subaltern Vision: Essays in the Postcolonial Indian Text<\/i><\/a> (Cambridge<i> <\/i>Scholars Publishing) in April.\u00a0 His paper &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.india-seminar.com\/2012\/640\/640_amit_r_baishya.htm\">Returns to the Past: Violence, Memory and Ethics in Two Contemporary Assamese Novels<\/a>&#8221; is forthcoming in the December issue of <i>Seminar<\/i> (New Delhi). \u00a0<i>Seminar <\/i>is a well-known intellectual forum in India.\u00a0 Baishya also co-authored &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/kafila.org\/2012\/08\/30\/news-pornography-and-mediated-cultures-of-violence-anirban-k-baishya-shaheen-s-ahmed-and-amit-r-baishya\/\">News Pornography and Mediated Cultures of Violence<\/a>,\u201d an essay which was published on August 30, 2012 in <a href=\"http:\/\/kafila.org\/\">Kafila<\/a>&#8211;a well-known public intellectual website for South Asia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Adam R. Beach<\/strong> is co-editing (with Dr. Srividhya Swaminathan) a collection of essays titled\u00a0 <i>Invoking Slavery in the Eighteenth Century British Imagination: Literature, Politics, Culture<\/i>.\u00a0 The collection was recently accepted for publication by Ashgate Press and will appear in 2013.\u00a0 Beach\u2019s essay \u201cThe Good-Treatment Debate, Comparative Slave Studies, and the \u2018Adventures\u2019 of T.S\u201d will appear in the collection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Sussana Benko\u2019s<\/strong> article, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/JAAL.00142\/abstract\">Scaffolding: An ongoing process to support student writers<\/a>,&#8221; was published in the December\/January edition of the <i>Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Benko\u2019s<\/strong> paper, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/d-scholarship.pitt.edu\/12309\/\">Teaching to the Task: \u00a0Preservice teachers&#8217; instruction for cognitively demanding writing tasks<\/a>,&#8221; has been accepted for the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). \u00a0This paper will be presented as part of a paper session titled &#8220;Perspectives on Writing Instruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Adrienne Bliss<\/strong> presented a paper on November 10th at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luc.edu\/mmla\/\">Midwest Modern Language Association<\/a>&#8216;s 54th Annual Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio entitled &#8220;The Forever Indebted Body: Creating Identity in Prisoners Sentenced to Life Without Parole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Nov. 9<sup>th<\/sup>, <strong>Prof. Beth Dalton<\/strong> presented her creative nonfiction piece, &#8220;Magna Mater&#8221; at the <a href=\"http:\/\/samla.memberclicks.net\/conference\">South Atlantic Modern Language Association Conference<\/a> (SAMLA) in Durham, NC. &#8220;Magna Mater&#8221; was published this summer in Goddard College&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clockhousereview.com\/\">Clockhouse Review.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Michael Donnelly<\/strong> co-edited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parlorpress.com\/plagiarism\">Critical Conversations About Plagiarism<\/a> with Rebecca Ingalls, Tracy Ann Morse, Joanna Castner Post, and Anne Meade Stockdell-Giesler. The book was published by Parlor Press in their Lenses on Composition Studies Series.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate student <strong>Tess Evans\u2019 <\/strong>article &#8220;Constructions of Realty: The Rhetoric of the American Dream&#8221; was presented at <a href=\"http:\/\/mpcaaca.org\/\"><i>Midwest Popular Culture Association and Midwest American Culture Association Annual Conference<\/i><\/a>, Columbus, Ohio, October 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Robert D. Habich<\/strong> presented \u201cEmerson as Tourist: Italy, 1833\u201d at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leconversazioni.it\/index.php\">Conversazioni<\/a> in Italia, a transatlantic literary conference held in Florence, Italy from June 8-10, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate student <strong>Elmar Hashimov<\/strong> published two papers in the <i>Association for Computing Machinery&#8217;s (ACM) Special Interest Group on Design of Communication 2012 (<\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/sigdoc.acm.org\/\"><i>SIGDOC 2012<\/i><\/a><i>) Conference Proceedings<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hashimov<\/strong> co-authored (as first author) one of the papers with Dr. Brian McNely, and the other with a group of Ball State rhetoric and composition graduate students, with Jenn Stewart as first author. SIGDOC focuses on the design of communication as it is taught, practiced, researched, and conceptualized in a broad variety of fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hashimov<\/strong> published a<b> <\/b>first-author publication titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=2379105\">Left to Their Own Devices: <i>Ad Hoc <\/i>Genres and the Design of Transmedia Narratives<\/a>,&#8221; which reports on a year-long qualitative study on an immersive-learning class in SIGDOC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hashimov<\/strong> participated in a group publication of \u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=2379120\">A Qualitative Metasynthesis of Activity Theory in SIGDOC Proceedings 2001\u20132011<\/a>,&#8221; along with Nicki Baker (see above).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Darolyn Jones<\/strong><b>\u2019 <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.citywriteindy.org\/\">CityWrite<\/a> project was very successful. They had 341 people writing in Indianapolis at 25 different sites all over the city on National Writing Day. \u00a0The mayor even made a proclamation that it was Indianapolis Writing Day.\u00a0 They now have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/City-Write\/505038886190571\">Facebook<\/a> page as well. \u00a0Jones had several of her current or former BSU students who volunteered alongside Butler, IUPUI, and Marian students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Mai Kuha<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Elizabeth M. Riddle<\/strong> presented &#8220;Rude Apologies for a Political Event&#8221;\u00a0at LIAR III: Experimental and Empirical Approaches to Politeness and Impoliteness, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, August 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof. Sean Lovelace<\/strong> published a flash fiction piece titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordriot.org\/archives\/4657\">The Second Time I Met Ellie\u2019s Dad<\/a>\u201d in the fall 2012 issue of WORD RIOT, and another titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dogzplot.blogspot.com\/2012\/10\/to-do-list-sean-lovelace.html\">To-Do List<\/a>\u201d in the fall 2012 issue of Dogzplot Magazine. \u00a0He also had flash fiction pieces accepted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pankmagazine.com\/\">PANK Magazine<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/greenmountainsreview.com\/\">Green Mountains Review<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/grr.jsc.vsc.edu\/\">Gihon River Review<\/a> for upcoming issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Jackie Grustch McKinney\u2019s<\/strong> book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usu.edu\/usupress\/books\/index.cfm?isbn=9159\"><i>Peripheral Visions for Writing Centers<\/i><\/a>, has been accepted for publication by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usu.edu\/usupress\/\">Utah State University Press<\/a>. It is scheduled to be published by March 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof. Mark Neely\u2019s<\/strong> poems have recently been accepted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thirdcoastmagazine.com\/\"><i>Third Coast<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oberlin.edu\/ocpress\/field.html\"><i>FIELD<\/i><\/a><i>,<\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/home.comcast.net\/~jpdancingbear\/apj.html\"><i> American Poetry Journal<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colum.edu\/columbiapoetryreview\/\"><i>Columbia Poetry Review<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drunkenboat.com\/\"><i>Drunken Boat<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohio.edu\/nor\/\"><i>New Ohio Review<\/i><\/a><i>. <\/i>Most of these will appear in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <strong>Neely<\/strong> has been busy promoting his new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oberlin.edu\/ocpress\/Books\/Neely.htm\"><i>Beasts of the Hill<\/i><\/a><i> <\/i>(Oberlin College Press, 2012). He has done readings at IUPUI, Purdue University, University of Alabama\u2014Birmingham, Ashland University, the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Visible Voice Books in Cleveland, Ohio, and Bozarts Gallery in Oxford, Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Miranda Nesler <\/strong>was a fellowship participant last spring in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newberry.org\/03192012-warwick-newberry-workshop-paratexts\">Newberry Library-University of Warwick Project on Early Modern Paratexts<\/a> and was also an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow.\u00a0 She also spent this past summer as a scholar in residence at the Huntington Library&#8217;s Intensive Paleography Institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nesler\u2019s<\/strong> co-edited work,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/shakespeare.folger.edu\/other\/transcriptions\/L.a.36to46and473.pdf\"><i>A Semi-Diplomatic Edition of the Letters of Anthony Bagot<\/i><\/a> <i>(1558-1622)<\/i>\u00a0 (with Kristen Deiter, Rebecca Fall, Meghan Davis Mercer, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Susan Stafinbil, and J. Case Tompkins) has been released through The Folger Shakespeare Library.\u00a0 Her article &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisroughmagic.org\/nesler%20article.html\">Performative Education and Educational Disruption: Gender in\u00a0<i>The Taming of the Shrew<\/i> and <i>The Tamer Tam&#8217;d<\/i><\/a><i>&#8220;<\/i>\u00a0was published last summer at <i>This Rough Magic. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nesler\u2019s<\/strong> blog &#8220;Performing Humanity&#8221; (<span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">www.performinghumanity.wordpress.com<\/span>) has gained 5000 viewers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Martha J. Payne<\/strong> reviewed the book<i>, <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiley.com\/WileyCDA\/WileyTitle\/productCd-1405194561,descCd-description.html\"><i>Exploring Greek Myth<\/i><\/a> by Matthew Clark. The review was published in <a href=\"http:\/\/cjonline.com\/\"><i>CJ<\/i>-Online<\/a> on the 25<sup>th<\/sup> of November.\u00a0<i>CJ<\/i>Online is an electronic forum for book reviews for the <i>Classical Journal<\/i>, a publication of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South.<\/p>\n<p>On September 28, <strong>Payne<\/strong> presented &#8220;Channeling Hades&#8221; at the Film and History Conference: Film and Myth in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.\u00a0 The talk focused on representations of the Greek god, Hades, in ancient art and literature and his manifestations in the films <i>Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief<\/i>, and<i> Clash of the Titans<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Rai Peterson\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/bsuenglish.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/07\/kurt-vonnegut-remembered-dr-rai-peterson-and-andrew-neylon-interview-vonneguts-closest-friends-and-family\/\">KVML<\/a> project was selected as the Miller College of Business outstanding immersive project of 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof. Pat Ryan<\/strong> was recognized in the Muncie Star Press for 19 years of teaching in Indiana correctional institutions, including 11 years of teaching English composition in prison settings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the latest installment of our \u201cGood News\u201d series, The Ball State English Department \u00a0highlights the accomplishments of the department\u2019s graduate students and faculty during the Fall 2012 semester: Graduate student Nicki Literland Baker was a co-author on a recent publication: Stewart, J.
