Continue reading to celebrate all of our department&#8217;s achievements from the past couple of months as we near the end of 2020.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>Faculty Good News<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Peter Bethanis<\/strong> has a painting, an essay, and several poems recently published or forthcoming in <em>San Antonio Review<\/em>, <em>Book XI<\/em>, <em>Hinterland<\/em>, <em>And So It Goes<\/em>, and <em>Talking Writing<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rani Deighe Crowe<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Rani Deighe Crowe\u2019s short film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quiet on Set<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has recently been selected to Tallgrass Film Festival in Witchita, KS, International Short Film Festival Kalmthout in Belgium, Cayenne Short Film Festival, NYC, NY, and Centre Film Festival in State College, Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Rani\u2019s feature screenplay, <i>Our Prestigious Faculty<\/i>, is an official selection of the Austin Revolution Film Festival.<\/li>\n<li>Professor Crowe\u2019s short short film, <i>Shelter Alone at Home<\/i>, was a semi-finalist for Best Actress in the Couch Film Festival in Toronto.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Michael Begnal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s chapbook <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mikebegnal.blogspot.com\/2020\/10\/new-chapbook-tropospheric-clouds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tropospheric Clouds<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was published by Adjunct Press. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Begnal\u2019s essay \u201c&#8217;the fabric \/ through which&#8217;: Immanence and Ecopoetics in Maurice Scully\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Humming<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d was published in the edited collection <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shearsman.com\/store\/Kenneth-Keating-ed-A-Line-of-Tiny-Zeros-in-the-Fabric-Essays-on-the-Poetry-of-Maurice-Scully-p194157248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Line of Tiny Zeros in the Fabric: Essays on the Poetry of Maurice Scully<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, edited by Ken Keating, published by Shearsman Books.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Additionally, Prof. Begnal\u2019s poem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recenterpress.com\/issue-four-michael-begnal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cOwners\u201d<\/a> appears online in the poetry journal of Recenter Press (issue 4, Fall 2020).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Emily Ruth Rutter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s current book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Celebrity: Contemporary Representations of Postbellum Athletes and Artists<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has been accepted for publication by University of Delaware Press and will be in print in November 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Andrea Wolfe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Mothers and the National Body Politic: The Narrative Positioning of the Black Maternal Body from the Civil War Period through the Present<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, was published by Lexington Press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianawritingproject.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Indiana Writing Project<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is thrilled to partner with Burris Laboratory School to support student writers in middle and high school. <\/span><b>Dr. Susanna Benko<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is working with middle and high school ELA teachers to study students&#8217; writing needs, support struggling writers, and to develop peer tutoring programs for Burris students. This project is made possible through funding from the Indiana Department of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of the work with IWP and Burris, <\/span><b>Dr. Susanna Benko<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Dr. Jackie Grustch McKinne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">y are leading professional development for a team of teachers from six local school districts. In their work together, the team will study peer tutoring and student-run writing centers, and teachers will work to develop peer tutoring programs for their middle and high schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ben Bascom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> organized and chaired a panel on \u201cQueer Eccentricity in the Long Nineteenth-Century\u201d and presented a portion of his book project at the digital conference for C19: The Society of Nineteenth-Century Americanists. He also published a review of digital teaching resources for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/766175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Early American Literature.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Molly Ferguson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is presenting to the Newberry Library Irish Studies Seminar a chapter of her book project, \u201cShame, Silence and Escape in Mermaid and Selkie Stories\u201d on November 13th. Attendees read the essay in advance and an assigned respondent from the field will comment and lead discussion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kathryn S. Gardiner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s feature-length screenplay \u201cAdults of an Undescribed Species,\u201d an entomological fairy romcom, advanced to the second round of the 2020 Austin Film Festival and Screenwriting Competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">Students\/Alumni Good News<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Emilie Schiess<\/strong> has won the university\u2019s Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award (Masters Level). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check out <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indeliblepodcast.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indelible <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">co-creator and Creative Writing student <strong>Rebekah Hoffer\u2019s<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ballbearingsmag.com\/2020\/10\/12\/writing-with-indelible-ink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cWriting with Indelible Ink\u201d<\/a> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ball Bearings Magazine.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Hayat Bedaiwi,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who earned her PhD in English Literature from Ball State in 2019, has launched the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/writersbackstage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Writers Backstage podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The purpose of the podcast is to explore the stories behind the literature of immigrant writers and ethnic literature in the United States.
