Let&#8217;s celebrate their good news for the month!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000\">Faculty Good News<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Patrick Collier\u2019s<\/strong> book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teaching Literature in the Real World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will be published by Bloomsbury Academic in July 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Cathy Day<\/strong> will present (probably virtually) at the 2021 MLA Convention in January. They discussed the new Kelly Reichardt film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First Cow<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Emily Ruth Rutter<\/strong> hosted Poetry for Black Lives: A Reading and Conversation with Sequoia Maner and darlene anita scott on September 15. You can watch the YouTube recording of the event <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/revisitingtheelegy.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Molly Ferguson<\/strong> is a Newberry Library Irish Studies Seminar speaker for 2020-2021, where she will lead a virtual seminar titled, \u201cSilence, Shame, and Escape in Contemporary Mermaid and Selkie Stories,\u201d on November 13, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Mary Lou Vercellotti<\/strong> has a co-authored chapter <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEffects of Teachers\u2019 Language Ideologies on Language Learners\u2019 Translanguaging Practices in an Intensive English Program\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the recently published<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Envisioning TESOL through a Translanguaging Lens: Global Perspectives<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Find out more about teachers\u2019 views on translanguaging and the possible benefits of viewing translanguaging-as-a-resource in language learning classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Kathryn Ludwig\u2019s<\/strong> book review of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Midrashic Impulse and the Contemporary Literary Response to Trauma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Monica Osborne will appear in the winter 2020 issue (66.4) of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Modern Fiction Studies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Guilherme D. Garcia<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has finished work on his upcoming book, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/guilhermegarcia.github.io\/dvaslr.html\"><i>Data visualization and analysis in second language research<\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(under contract with Routledge)\u2014the book project is being funded by a Junior Faculty Award here at Ball State. Over the summer, Garcia also started work on a digital corpus of Brazilian Veneto (Talian)\u2014joint work with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nataliaguzzo.github.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nat\u00e1lia B. Guzzo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Because Talian texts are rarely found in digital format, the project involves OCR (optical character recognition) and text analytics\u2014see project page <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/guilhermegarcia.github.io\/talian\"><b>here<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where the corpus (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in progress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) can be accessed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>was invited to give a joint workshop on data analysis to over 500 linguistics students and faculty in Brazil (partnership with Brazil and UK scholars). He was also accepted to present his research as a talk at the <em>95th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America<\/em> (LSA Meeting).<\/li>\n<li>This fall Garcia\u2019s paper (joint work with Nat\u00e1lia B. Guzzo) <i>Phonological Variation and Prosodic Representation: Clitics in Portuguese-Veneto Contact<\/i> will soon appear in <i>Journal of Language Contact<\/i><em> 13<\/em>. This fall, the <a href=\"http:\/\/guilhermegarcia.github.io\/lingdata.html\"><b>LingData<\/b><\/a> reading group will resume its activities (via Zoom) later this month. The main goal of the group is to read and discuss papers involving linguistics and\/or quantitative data analysis (to promote linguistics as the scientific study of language, and to develop important technical skills for research and the job market). Students also report on the status of their research progress. Graduate students and faculty are welcome to participate\u2014please contact either Garcia (gdgarcia@bsu.edu) or Evan Ward (etward@bsu.edu).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Dr. Darolyn \u201cLyn\u201d Jones\u2019<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Jones&#8217; educational book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Painless Reading Comprehension<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was selected for a 4th edition run. The new edition with a new publisher will be out in the Spring of 2021.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>This June, Dr. Jones\u2019 article titled &#8221; &#8216;Don&#8217;t Speechify; Do Something&#8217;: University Students Experience Counter Narratives&#8221;, was accepted for publication in a special issue of <i>North Meridian Review<\/i> on The Freedom to Make and ReMake.<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Jones\u2019 literary essay titled \u201cIn Indy, #blackyouthmatter!\u201d was accepted for publication with Belt Publishing\u2019s city anthology titled, <i>The Indianapolis Anthology<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>In July, Dr. Jones edited a chapbook published by INwords Publications titled <i>Radical and Restorative Youth Freedom Voices.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Dr. Jones co-authored a paper with Associate Professor in Communication Studies, Dr. Marcy Meyer titled, \u201cMother-Teacher-Scholar-Advocates: Narrating Work-Life on the Professorial Plateau.\u201d\u00a0 The paper was accepted in September for winter publication in The <i>Journal of Organizational Ethnography<\/i> (JOE).<\/li>\n<li>In July, Dr. Jones was asked to develop a comprehensive curriculum for an eight-week course on narrative medicine and graphic medicine manifesto using creative narrative nonfiction writing prompts for pediatric residents at Riley Hospital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Rani Deighe Crowe<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her short film (with fellow English faculty Kathryn Gardiner and Ball State alumna, Cynda Williams) has been selected for the Rhode Island Black Film Festival Virtual Edition,\u00a0 Maupintown Film Festival in Charlottesville, Virginia, Inspired Faith Film Festival Online, Kleinkaap Short Film Festival in South Africa, and Louisville&#8217;s International Festival of Film.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Crowe\u2019s short film, <em>Heather Has Four Moms<\/em>, screened in Amaracourt Film Festival\u2019s Around the World in 80 Shorts online Film Series out of Italy, Image Nation Montreal\u2019s Facebook Live Event for Journ\u00e9e de Visibilit\u00e9 Lesbienne, State College PRIDE on Screen Virtual Film Fest and Q &amp; A, and the Independent Film Festival Ypsilanti in Ypsilanti, MI.<\/li>\n<li>Rani Deighe Crowe\u2019s latest short film, <i>Quiet on Set, <\/i>has been selected by the Indy Film Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana, SAGA Adelaide: International Women\u2019s Film Festival in Adelaide, Australia; New Haven Film Festival in New Haven, CT; Chain NYC Film Festival in New York City; Oregon Short Film Festival; Cineffable Paris International Lesbian and Feminist Film Festival in Paris, France; Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Ft Lauderdale, Florida; Pune Short Film Festival in Maharashtra, India; Goa Short Film Festival; Dayton Independent Film Festival; Twin Cities Film Festival in Minneapolis; Louisville&#8217;s International Festival of Film; NEZ Film Festival in Kolkata, India; YofiFest in Yonkers, NY; Southampton Film Festival in Southampton, UK, and Women Over Fifty Film Festival in London, UK. It was a finalist for the Editing Award at the Oregon Short Film Festival.<\/li>\n<li>The short film, <i>Obligatory Departmental Anti-Racist Statement<\/i>, from Crowe&#8217;s anthology of portraits of Americans from the pandemic was selected for the Oregon State International Film Festival. The short film stars Dr. Jeff Spanke and was adapted from his essay, &#8220;My Dear Racist Students.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Crowe\u2019s paper, \u201cStrategies of Activating the Oppressed Protagonist\u201d in Jane Anderson\u2019s \u20181961\u2019 of\u00a0 If These Walls Could Talk 2\u201d was selected by peer review\u00a0 and presented at the University Film and Video 2020 virtual conference.<\/li>\n<li>Curator Carmela at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearemovingstories.com\/smart-horror?fbclid=IwAR3x65MGzOVsgALGpSZsrS7RK9Mi2h-8Cradub2ZJjx60x2x7539joidfZU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We Are Moving Stories<\/a> selected Professor Crowe\u2019s short film, <i>Beautiful Eyes<\/i>, as one of \u201cthe most entertaining, powerful and inspiring horror films &#8211; both smart and silly\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Curator Carmela at We Are Moving Stories selected Professor Crowe\u2019s short film, <i>Heather Has Four Moms<\/i><b>\u00a0 <\/b>as one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearemovingstories.com\/lesbian?fbclid=IwAR2jQF3H6xT6nTk-mUO4T7qyFiaIOqvYSQVHpeG4QTXd1cQaH136WpXWc3g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cthe most entertaining, powerful and inspiring LESBIAN films.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Crowe\u2019s book review of Classical Storytelling and Contemporary Screenwriting was published in the spring\/summer 2020 edition of The Journal of Film and Television.<\/li>\n<li>Crowe was part of a virtual panel of Provincetown women filmmaker residents promoting their new Vorst House Residence in Provincetown, Massachusetts.<\/li>\n<li>Crowe became a Board Member with the <a href=\"http:\/\/opencircletheatre.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Circle Theater Company<\/a>, in Washington DC, \u201cpromoting employment in the arts for people with disabilities and a more accessible community for all\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Emily Jo Scalzo<\/strong> published <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yespoetry.com\/news\/emilyjoscalzo-they-all-ask\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">two poems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes Poetry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> magazine, \u201cDigress\u201d and \u201cChassis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Mark Neely\u2019s<\/strong> book manuscript, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ticker, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">won the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.losthorsepress.org\/the-winner-of-the-idaho-prize-for-poetry-2020-is\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Idaho Prize for Poetry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and will be published by Lost Horse Press in 2021. He has poems appearing in recent issues of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pleiades <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Copper Nickel.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Andrea Wolfe\u2019s<\/strong> book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Mothers and the National Body Politic: The Narrative Positioning of the Black Maternal Body from the Civil War Period through the Present<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will be published by Lexington Press in the coming months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Katy Didden\u2019s<\/strong> poem \u201cEmbrace Them All\u201d was included in the 5th edition of Bedford St. Martin\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Literature: A Portable Anthology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. An excerpt from her poem \u201cThe Sycamore on Praise,\u201d illustrated and animated by Cynthia Perez, was projected onto the walls of the University of Missouri\u2019s Agriculture Building as part of their <a href=\"https:\/\/air.missouri.edu\/air\/focus-poetry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artist-in-Residence Program.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Michael Begnal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s poem \u201cElegy for Earth\u201d appears in the anthology <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Silver Pinion: To Affirm the Marvelous<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Word Studio, 2020, ISBN: 978-0-9987678-1-9).\u00a0 Begnal\u2019s translation of Irish poet Gabriel Rosenstock\u2019s \u201cS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e9 Tanka\/<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Six Tankas\u201d appears in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poetry Ireland Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryireland.ie\/publications\/poetry-ireland-review\/back-issues\/issue-130\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">issue 130<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000\">Students\/Alumni Good News<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Emily Turner<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">had her short story \u201cContributor Notes\u201d published in the Little Fiction Big Truths journal in their 2020 Flash issue. The piece grew from an assignment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/english\/connect-with-us\/faculty-staff\/faculty\/lovelacesean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Lovelace<\/a>\u2019s Introduction to Fiction course, based upon the works of visiting author Michael Martone. \u201cProfessor Lovelace is an invaluable professor,\u201d Emily said, \u201cand I really do owe this publication to him and, in part, Martone himself.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was selected to be an editing intern assisting with the Center\u2019s Summer 2020 chapbook publication titled,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Radical and Restorative Youth Freedom Voices<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Emily Turner and Megan Santin<\/strong>\u00a0both served as teaching interns with the Indiana Writers Center\u2019s Indianapolis youth public memoir project and program.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students from Jill Christman\u2019s Fall 2019 VBC class, <\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indeliblepodcast.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indelible: Campus Sexual Violence<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including current English majors <strong>Rebekah Hoffer<\/strong> (reporter, writer, producer) and <strong>Annie Ashbrook<\/strong> (host), our 2020 Outstanding English major <strong>Jonah James<\/strong> (reporter, writer, website designer), and recent TCOM graduate <strong>Lizzy Bernard<\/strong> (sound mixer and documentary producer) screened their documentary and hosted a live roundtable discussion about their podcast and activism to combat campus sexual violence at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janascampaign.org\/uploads\/1\/6\/8\/7\/16871386\/midwest_campus_safety_summit_schedule_9-10-20.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jana\u2019s Campaign Midwest Safety Summit <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in September.
