Can you believe it’s almost February? The first month of the decade flew by! Luckily, that didn’t stop our #bsuenglish<\/span> faculty, alumni, and students from hustling. Alex Kaufman’s book!<\/p><\/div>\n

Alex Kaufman<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s book, The Jack Cade Rebellion of 1450: A Sourcebook<\/i><\/a> was published by Lexington Books\/Roman and Littlefield.<\/p>\n

Victoria Barrett<\/strong><\/span> published an essay, \u201cThe Chimera\u2019s Child<\/a>\u201d in Gay Magazine on 12\/31.<\/p>\n

Brent M. Blackwell<\/strong><\/span> recently published the article “Breaking all the Rules: Bringing Calculus into the Humanities Classroom\u201d in the upcoming issue of Honors In Practice.<\/i>\u00a0 He will also present a paper at the International Medieval Congress 2020, held at the University of Leeds in England on 6-9 July 2020.<\/p>\n

Emily Rutter<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s book Revisiting the Elegy in the Black Lives Matter Era <\/i><\/a>(co-edited and introduced with Tiffany Austin, Sequoia Maner, and Darlene Anita Scott) was just published by Routledge.<\/p>\n

Katy Didden<\/span><\/strong> staged reading of poems from her new manuscript, Ore Choir: The Lava on Iceland<\/i>, as part of the Never Records Project at Brooklyn Academy of Music\u2019s Rudin Family Gallery.<\/p>\n

Guilherme D. Garcia<\/strong><\/span>‘s paper ‘When lexical statistics and the grammar conflict<\/a>‘<\/i> has recently appeared in Language Volume <\/i>95, Number 4<\/a>, the flagship journal of the Linguistic Society of America. He has recently been invited to give a talk in February at the University of Illinois, Chicago. In February, Garcia will also present his research at the Annual Meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society<\/a>, at the University of California. Finally, he has been invited to give two talks on text analytics using computational methods later this term at Ball State in the Departments of Journalism and Sociology.<\/p>\n

Michael Begnal<\/strong><\/span> published<\/a> two poems in the latest issue of Coal City Review<\/i>, number 43, 2019 (ISSN 10062-5011). Based at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Coal City Review<\/i> is a print-only literary journal.<\/p>\n

Matthew Hartman<\/strong><\/span> presented \u201cTeaching Art in the Humanities to Spark Creativity\u201d with students Nikki Dixon<\/strong><\/span> and Kaylee Mullins<\/strong><\/span> at the National Collegiate Honors Council in New Orleans on Nov. 9, 2019.<\/p>\n

Rani Deighe Crowe<\/strong><\/span> and Kathryn Gardiner<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s short film, Welfare Check<\/em><\/a>, won Best Narrative Short at the Gary International Black Film Festival, and Best Mental Awareness from Urban Media Makers. It was accepted to the Kwanza Film Festival in Harlem, NY and the Denton Black Film Festival in Denton, Texas. Welfare Check was nominated for best woman-directed short film by the Kwanza Film Festival.<\/p>\n

Rani<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s short film, The Test<\/a>, <\/i>was accepted to the Over the Fence Comedy Film Festival in Perth, Australia.<\/p>\n

Rani<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s short film, Heather Has Four Moms<\/a>,<\/i> was accepted to the Radical Womyn Film Festival in Sydney, Australia and invited to screen in the Queer Esslingen Film Festival in Germany, Berlin Lesbian and Non-Binary Film Festival in Berlin, and the Festival Des Images Aux Mots the LGBTQI Film Festival in Toulouse, France.<\/p>\n

Rani<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s paper, Combatting the Empathy Gap: The Significance of Arts and Media in Developing Empathy <\/i>has been accepted to the Global Arts International Symposium on Arts, Health, Wellness, and Sustainable Development at Ohio University.<\/p>\n

Darolyn \u201cLyn\u201d Jones<\/strong> <\/span>was awarded an Indiana Campus Connect (ICC) Strengthening Communities grant.\u00a0 Her special topics ENG 104 course will research and work with issues of aging and ageism with the Delaware County Senior Center.<\/p>\n

Lyn Jones<\/strong><\/span> was also accepted to present at the East Central Writing Center Association (ECWCA) co-presenting with department students regarding their internships at the Indiana Writers Center.\u00a0 The title of their discussion is #blacklivesmatter & Resistance Writing at the Crossroads of America<\/p>\n

Cathy Day<\/strong> <\/span>has been invited to speak in three different capacities at the 2020 Association of Departments of English (ADE) Summer Seminar North (Chicago, 6-8 July).<\/p>\n

In a plenary session titled \u201cCreative Writing: Curriculum and Innovations\u201d<\/p>\n

In a pre-seminar workshop on \u201cReversing the Decline in Undergraduate Enrollments and Majors\u201d with Derek Pacheco of Purdue University.<\/p>\n

Emily Jo Scalzo<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s poems \u201cLast Night I Dreamt I Killed a Man,\u201d \u201cParched in Fresno, 2010,\u201d and \u201cWhy I Haven\u2019t Worn Shorts in 23 Years\u201d were published in volume 167 of Down in the Dirt <\/i>magazine, titled Why Peace Will Forever Elude Us<\/i><\/a>, in December. The poems were also anthologized in three different anthologies by the publisher: Legacy<\/i><\/a>, Art House<\/i><\/a>, and Burning Bridges<\/i><\/a>. Her haiku-style poem \u201cAfter Charleston\u201d appears in Emily Rutter<\/strong><\/span> et al.\u2019s new book Revisiting the Elegy in the Black Lives Matter Era<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Silas Hansen<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s essay, \u201cOf Smells,\u201d was accepted by Southern Indiana Review<\/i> and will appear in an upcoming issue.<\/p>\n

Susanna Benko<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s paper \u201cPolicy into Practice: Understanding the Nature and Epistemologies of State-Provided Writing Resources in the Era of Common Standards\u201d (co-authored with Emily Hodge<\/span><\/strong> and Serena Salloum<\/span><\/strong>) has been accepted for an upcoming issue of the Journal of Literacy Research<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Rai Peterson<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s article, \u201cJanet Flanner\u2019s The Cubical City and the Life She Left Behind\u201d<\/a> was published in Revue \u00e9\u2019ectronique d\u2019\u00e9tudes sur la monde Anglophone. <\/i>16.2 (Summer 2019).<\/p>\n

Rai Peterson<\/strong><\/span>, Debbie Mix<\/strong><\/span>, and James Bradley<\/strong><\/span> (Book Arts Collaborative<\/a>)\u00a0 had their poster featuring a quotation from Moby Dick <\/i>to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Herman Melville\u2019s birth added to the permanent collection at the Bodleian Library, Oxford.\u00a0 The call number is Rec. a.54.<\/p>\n

Will Chesher<\/strong> <\/span>has been selected as the winner of the 2019-2020 Ball State University Excellence in Teaching Award for the masters level. He will be honored at the Annual Graduate School Recognition Ceremony on March 23, 2020.<\/p>\n
