I left the classroom so I could make a larger impact\u2014reach, teach, and mentor students like you about the power of discourse and the responsibility of teaching well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Here\u2019s why I love teaching English, and why you should consider serving as an English teacher for your future career.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><b>Tough Talk over Tough Text:<\/b> <\/span>Teaching English, unlike any other subject area, allows us to engage in tough talk over tough text (O\u2019Donnell-Allen, 2011).\u00a0\u00a0We can engage in critical conversations over history, politics, and culture.\u00a0\u00a0Making literature and writing in your courses authentic, purposeful, simultaneously synthesizing success and rigor allows your students to leave your class with an appreciation and an understanding of how powerful the use of rhetoric is in framing and constructing text, argument, and even classroom conversation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><b>Agency and Choice:<\/b> <\/span>English teachers have a great deal of choice and agency in the texts they teach and the writing tasks they present.\u00a0\u00a0We have a teacher\u2019s license that yes, does tie us to standards and certain curricular content, but within that framework, there is much creative license.\u00a0\u00a0You aren\u2019t stuck in a cubicle or at a desk.\u00a0\u00a0You get to design your day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><b>Those Who Can, Teach:<\/b><\/span> Teachers remain active readers and writers, daily modeling their own reading and writing practices with students.\u00a0\u00a0We are readers, writers, debaters, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/english\/blog\/2019\/03\/21\/dr-lyn-jones-and-students-shine-at-disability-rights-symposium\/\"><span style=\"color: #800000\">speakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #800000\">.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We do it every single day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><b>Teacher Leader:<\/b><\/span> If you are called to lead, there is no greater leadership than to teach.\u00a0\u00a0Every day, you stand in front of classrooms of students who are waiting for your servant leadership.\u00a0\u00a0Yes, they will test and challenge you.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s their job as developmentally growing human beings.\u00a0\u00a0And your job as a teacher leader is to design and deliver content that allows students to wrestle with issues, question, grow, and learn.\u00a0\u00a0You are in control of your own classroom and students every day.\u00a0\u00a0This is a tremendous power, one that must be taken seriously and can\u2019t go unchecked.\u00a0\u00a0But yielded and executed well has the power to also transform you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #993300\">Teaching Well is Thrilling:<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>You have the opportunity every day to make a positive impact on a young person\u2019s life.\u00a0\u00a0Remember who that teacher was for you?\u00a0\u00a0You can be that teacher and pay it forward.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t know of any other profession where you daily create, inspire, lead, and model.
