So we\u2019ve got a lot of good news to share this month!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Faculty News<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Prof. Michael Begn<\/b><strong>a<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>l <\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0article \u201c\u2018Bullets for Hands\u2019: Witter Bynner, Arthur Davison Ficke, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spectra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Poems of World War I\u201d was published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twentieth-Century Literature<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, vol. 64, no. 2 (June 2018).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">article \u201cModernist Mythologies: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Turquoise Trail<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Anthology and the Poets of Santa Fe\u201d was published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Western American Literature<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, vol. 53, no. 2 (Summer 2018).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He had<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> five poems (homages to Archie Shepp, Bill Evans, Peggy Pond Church, Leroy Carr, and Richard Realf) published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unionpenumbra.org\/article\/five-homage-poems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Penumbra <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and another in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/smithereenspress.com\/publications\/slm1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smithereens Literary Magazine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Ireland).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, he gave a presentation of poetry at the Sport Literature Association Conference on June 20, 2018, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, titled \u201cBaseball Poems\/Baseball Images,&#8221; and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was interviewed on Bangor, Maine\u2019s AM620 WZON radio on August 8, 2018, and <a href=\"http:\/\/streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net\/v5\/WZO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read some poems on the air<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Prof.\u00a0<\/strong><b>Brent M. Blackwell\u00a0<\/b>a<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ttended three conferences this year (The Benjamin v. Feminist Film Festival, Paris, Oct-Nov, 2018<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twin Rivers Media Festival, Asheville, NC, TBA this winter, \u00a02018<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> film, <\/span><i style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beautiful Eyes,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0screened with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the \u201cBest of Final Girls Women in Horror Film Festival\u201d at Philadelphia Museum of Contemporary Art, in July, screened at Spook Show Film Festival Matoon, IL in August, and was selected by GRRRL HAUS for their fest at Alamo Draft House in Yokers, NY in October.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her shor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t film, <\/span><i style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Texting: A Love Story, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will screen at the festival, Suburbinale, in the suburbs of Vienna, Austria in September, and her\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TV pilot script, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recess Duty,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was an official selection for the Atlanta Comedy Film Festival. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prof. Crowe&#8217;s short story, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Church of Denial<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, was published this August in the inaugural edition of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/delayfiction.org\/2018-08\/church-of-denial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delay Fiction.<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Prof. Cathy Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will be presenting on two panels at the 2019 Association of Writers &amp; Writing Programs (AWP) Conference in Portland, OR:\u201cTeaching the Impossible: Teaching Novel Writing to Undergraduates,\u201d and \u201cPR for CW: Responding to Enrollment Challenges in Grad and Undergrad Programs.\u201d AWP reports that 556 panel proposals were accepted out of 1710 submitted, an acceptance rate of 32%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Prof. Kathryn S. Gardiner<\/strong>\u2019s screenplay, \u201cThe Art of Yielding,\u201d has advanced to the semi-finals of the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, the scriptwriting contest coordinated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Semifinalists represent the top 150 scripts of the over 8,000 submissions the Nicholl Fellowships receive each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guilhermegarcia.github.io\/\"><strong>Prof. Gui Garcia<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prof. Garcia\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recently gave a talk on Bayesian data analysis applied to linguistics, which was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">live streamed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to graduate students and faculty members at thirteen universities in Brazil. The talk was part of an ongoing broader research project of his that examines how statistical analyses can incorporate linguistic assumptions. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">also presented joint work on English and Portuguese phonology at the 36th <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/linguistics.ucla.edu\/conference\/wccfl36\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">West Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0(WCCFL, at UCLA), one of the three main conferences on theoretical linguistics. Another joint project, which focuses on prosodic effects on pronoun interpretation in Italian, was presented at the 2nd <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tu-braunschweig.de\/anglistik\/isbpac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">International Symposium on Bilingual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and L2 Processing in Adults and Children (ISBPAC), held at the Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig, in Germany. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the summer, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he\u00a0also had five other papers accepted for presentation in the fall.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14887\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/09\/10095259\/keepmuncieweird-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/09\/10095259\/keepmuncieweird-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/09\/10095259\/keepmuncieweird-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/09\/10095259\/keepmuncieweird-541x700.jpg 541w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/09\/10095259\/keepmuncieweird.jpg 773w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/>Prof. Darolyn \u201cLyn\u201d Jones<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her article<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cUnschooling Teaching Practices and Community Literacy\u201d was accepted with revisions for publication in the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Journal of Teaching Writing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She edited two community anthologies, one released July 20, the seventh in the series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I Remember: Indianapolis Youth Write about Their Lives <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with INwords Publications and the other through a Ball State Immersive Creative Writing in the Community, 409 Press project titled, <em>#keepmuncieweird&#8230;and Whimsical!<\/em>, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/keepmuncieweird-Whimsical-Darolyn-Lyn-Jones\/dp\/069211047X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">available on Amazon<\/a>. \u00a0President Geoffrey Mearns and his wife, Mrs. Jennifer Mearns, were featured in the Muncie anthology and participated in the book release event held at Kennedy Public Library in Muncie.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This fall, she&#8217;ll present at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the international conference on Literacy, Culture, and Language Education held in Bloomington, Indiana on the topic of \u201cUnschooling and Equity Teaching Practices and Community Literacy:#blacklivesmatter.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And she was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> interviewed about diversity in children\u2019s literature for the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">South Bend Tribune.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southbendtribune.com\/news\/local\/new-south-bend-bookstore-promotes-diversity-inclusion-through-literature\/article_c8c03c75-1be0-5f62-b4b5-e3ddf26d41c3.html\">\u201cNew South Bend Bookstore Promotes Diversity Inclusion Through Literature.\u201d <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Prof. Kathryn Ludwig<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She presented a paper at the American Literature Association 29<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Annual Conference on American Literature in San Francisco in May. Their subject was Indianapolis\u2019 own, Janet Flanner (1892-1978), novelist and journalist who wrote the \u201cLetter from Paris\u201d column for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New Yorker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">magazine from 1925-1975 as well as profiles of many famous artists and notorious political and military leaders.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She&#8217;ll also<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0be the \u201cprisoner\u201d locked in the front window of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library from September 24-29 to commemorate Banned Books Week. Prof. Peterson is the first female author to be so \u201cdetained.\u201d She invites you to stop by the library to chat that week; prisoners love visitors! \u00a0The theme for the event is \u201cLonesome No More,\u201d the subtitle of Vonnegut\u2019s novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slapstick<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and programming will focus on mental health issues.
