Faculty News<\/span><\/h3>\n

Prof. Sean Lovelace<\/strong> published four \u201cLetters to Jim Harrison\u201d in Willow Springs<\/em>\u00a0Magazine<\/em> Winter 2018 issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Carolyn J. MacKay<\/strong> and Prof.\u00a0Frank R Trechsel<\/strong> published “An Alternative Reconstruction of Proto-Totonac-Tepehua” in\u00a0the International Journal of American Linguistics<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Michael Begnal<\/strong> published a review of recent books by Irish poets Trevor Joyce, Nerys Williams, and Susan Connolly in the latest issue of Trumpet<\/em>, a journal of criticism and opinion published by\u00a0Poetry Ireland<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Rani Deighe Crowe<\/strong>\u2019s poem, My First Love<\/em>, was published in The American Journal of Poetry<\/em> Volume 4<\/a>. \u00a0Rani\u2019s short film\u00a0Texting: A Love Story\u00a0<\/em>is an official selection of the Harrogate Film Festival, to be held in March in Harrogate, UK. Texting<\/em> will also be screening at the inaugural Bull City International Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina and the Women\u2019s Worldwide Film Festival in Scottsdale, Arizona this month.<\/p>\n

Prof. Emily Rutter<\/strong> published \u201cGoing Back to Kansas City: An Interview with Ira McKnight\u201d in NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Pamela Hartman,<\/strong> with current graduate student\u00a0Hannah Fulton\u00a0<\/strong>and former BSU graduates\u00a0Jessica Berg<\/strong> and Brandon Schuler\u00a0<\/strong>will be presenting \u201cMemes to Mirrors: Integrating the Visual Arts into Secondary English Language Arts\u201d at the International Federation of Teachers of English conference in Birmingham, UK in June.<\/p>\n

Prof. Ben Bascom<\/strong> published a book review in Common-Place: The Journal of Early American Life<\/em><\/a> and was invited to write a response to an essay about Henri Michaux<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Adam R. Beach<\/strong> presented on \u201cOlaudah Equine and the Temptations of Ottoman Migration\u201d at the annual convention of the Modern Language Association (MLA), the premier conference in literary studies, in New York on January 7. The paper was part of a session on \u201cMigrancy and Empire in the Eighteenth Century.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prof. Sreyoshi Sarkar<\/strong>\u00a0also presented at MLA. She organized the January 7 roundtable on \u201cVisualizing Violence in Contemporary States of Insecurity\u201d and presented her paper, \u201cMichael Winterbottom\u2019s In This World<\/em> and the Disjuncture\/s of Globalization\u201d at the roundtable.<\/p>\n

Professor Cathy Day<\/strong> was invited to be a special guest at \u201cUncle Dan\u2019s Book Nerds,\u201d a periodic book chat hosted by renowned Hoosier author Dan Wakefield. Prof. Jennifer Grouling<\/strong> published \u201cThe Path to Competency-Based Certification: A Look at the LEAP Challenge and the VALUE Rubric for Written Communication\u201d in the Journal of Writing Assessment<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Lyn Jones<\/strong> received a Provost Immersive Learning Grant for Fall 2018<\/a>. Her project is \u201cRethinking the Stories We Publish, Shelve, and Read: Rethinking Disability in Children\u2019s and Young Adult Literature.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prof. Jill Christman<\/strong> has two new essays coming out in prestigious literary journals this spring: \u201cNaked Underneath Our Clothes\u201d in Creative Nonfiction\u00a0<\/em>and \u201cLife\u2019s Not a Paragraph\u201d in River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative<\/em>. \u00a0Professor Christman\u2019s contribution to Essay Daily\u2019s advent calendar in December celebrated former English Department students: \u201cJill Christman on Essays to Pry Open Doors: Ashley C. Ford, Alysia Sawchyn, & Brittany Means.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Speaking of Ashley C. Ford<\/strong>, this incredible news: Flat Iron Books will be publishing her memoir, Somebody\u2019s Daughter<\/em>, under the imprint An Oprah Book.<\/p>\n

Prof. Kathryn Ludwig<\/strong> gave a talk entitled \u201cOffred and Gilead\u201d and led a discussion on Margaret Atwood\u2019s The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> at a Muncie Public Library book club meeting at Maring-Hunt Library on Wednesday, January 24.<\/p>\n

Prof. Guilherme D. Garcia<\/strong> will present \u201cRegulating the interaction between lexical statistics and the grammar: a naturalness bias in learning weight\u201d at the 41st Generative Linguistics in the Old World (GLOW) conference,<\/a> held at the Hungarian Academy of Science in Budapest in April.<\/p>\n

Prof. Rai Peterson<\/strong> is teaching at Book Arts Collaborative, a community letterpress and hand-sewn book bindery located in the Madjax Building in downtown Muncie. \u00a0You can learn more by visiting the collaborative’s website<\/a>\u00a0or listening to this Ball State Daily<\/em> News<\/em> podcast<\/a> on which Dr. Peterson muses aloud about the materiality of books. Book Arts Collaborative holds an open house on First Thursday<\/a> from 5-8 p.m., offers community workshops, and is available for tours and demonstrations by appointment.<\/p>\n
