We’ve got a lot of good news this month!<\/p>\n

Faculty News<\/span><\/h2>\n

Andrea Wolfe<\/strong> will be presenting a session entitled “Facing International Students: Building Empathy through Storytelling” with Lizz Alezetes and Deborah McMillan, both of the <\/span>Intensive English Institute<\/span><\/a> at Ball State, at the 2017 INTESOL Conference on November 11th<\/span><\/p>\n

Molly Ferguson<\/strong> was elected president of the Midwest Regional American Conference for Irish Studies.\u00a0<\/a><\/span>On October 6th, she presented a paper, \u201c\u2018To say no and no and no again\u2019: Fasting as Resistance in Emma Donoghue\u2019s <\/span>The Wonder<\/span><\/i>\u201d at the Midwest ACIS at the University of Missouri.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Katy Didden\u2019s<\/strong> essay \u201cA Poetics of Tectonic Scale: The Great Distance Poems of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Marianne Moore, and Layli Long Soldier\u201d<\/a> was published by Poetry Northwest<\/a>.<\/em> \u00a0They also published her interview-style \u201cdouble erasure\u201d (a poem that engages with a historical text that critiques the naming of Mt. Rainier). <\/span><\/p>\n

Jill Christman\u2019s<\/strong> book Borrowed Babies<\/em><\/a> has been adapted into a play by Ball State professor Jennifer Blackmer. This play will be produced at Ball State University in Spring 2019 in Strother Studio with Karen Kessler directing. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ADE (Association of Departments of English<\/a>) has invited\u00a0Cathy Day<\/strong> to join Dr. Robert Matz (dean at George Mason) and present on “Reversing the Decline in English Majors and Enrollments” at the ADE workshop in Ann Arbor, MI July 9-12, 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pamela Hartman<\/strong> was honored at the CAEP\/SPA Reception. This event honors the programs that received National SPA Recognition and the faculty who wrote the reports in preparation for the CAEP Accreditation Process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Rutter<\/strong> was selected to serve on the Editorial Board for Performing Celebrity<\/em>, a new book series from the University of Delaware Press<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Darolyn \u201cLyn\u201d Jones<\/strong> was invited to present on both flash memoir and telling the story of your life at the Indiana Author\u2019s Fair<\/a>, held annually in Indianapolis at Central Library in Indianapolis. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rani Deighe Crowe\u2019s<\/strong> poem, “<\/span>My First Love<\/span>,”\u00a0<\/span><\/i>has been accepted to the American Journal of Poetry<\/a> for its Fourth Volume, published New Year\u2019s Day. Her short film, <\/span>Beautiful Eyes, <\/span><\/i>was screened in Final Girls Women In Horror \u201cBest of\u201d screenings in Innsbruck, Austria on October 6, and in Tel Aviv<\/span>, Israel on October 24. Beautiful Eyes<\/em> was also screened in the Final Girls’ special Halloween screenings in Nuremburg and Berlin on October 31.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Megumi Hamada<\/strong> (faculty) and Nuha Alsalem (Applied Linguistics graduate student) presented their paper, “Role of Semantic Transparency in English L2 Lexical Inference” at Second Language Research Forum<\/a>, on October 14, at Columbus, Ohio. <\/span><\/p>\n

Megumi Hamada’s<\/strong> article, “L2 Word Recognition: Influence of L1 Orthography on Multi-syllabic Word Recognition,” was published in <\/span>Journal of Psycholinguistic Research<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joyce Huff<\/strong> presented a paper entitled \u201cDigging Up the Past: British Victorian Constructions of the Corpse Trade in James Blake Bailey\u2019s <\/span>The Diary of a Resurrectionist<\/span><\/i> (1898) and Robert Louis Stevenson\u2019s \u2018The Body Snatcher\u2019 (1884)\u201d at the <\/span>Midwest Conference on British Studies <\/span><\/i><\/a>on September 29, 2017. She had the honor of being on the panel with Ball State English graduate student, Anthony Salazar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Lou Vercellotti\u2019s<\/strong> article, “Do interactive learning spaces increase student achievement? A comparison of classroom context,” was published in <\/span>Active Learning in Higher Education<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mark Neely\u2019s<\/strong> poem \u201cSubvocal (3)\u201d was published by Willow Springs<\/em>\u00a0in their summer issue. The poem also appears on their website along with a brief interview.\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He also had three minimalist poems appear in Juked.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Sean Lovelace<\/strong> has three new hybrid texts (letters), \u201cLetters to Jim Harrison<\/a>,\u201d in <\/span>New Limestone Review.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Passages North <\/span><\/i><\/a>has taken six of the \u201cLetters to Jim Harrison\u201d to appear in Spring 2018. <\/span>Juked<\/span><\/i> Magazine has taken a \u201cLetter to Jim Harrison\u201d for Spring 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kathryn Powell<\/strong> (Undergraduate English Studies) won Best Presentation for her creative work, “The Listening Horizon.”<\/p>\n

Abdullah Albalawi<\/strong> (Practical Criticism Midwest) also won Best Presentation for presenting his research, “Gender Differences in The Speech Act of Thanking in Saudi Arabic.”<\/p>\n

Hannah Bovino<\/strong> won the Doggeral Contest at PCM for presenting her poem, “I’m sorry iPhone.”<\/p>\n

Kelsey Englert<\/strong>\u00a0(MA in English, 2014) had her flash fiction piece “Textbook Endings<\/a>” published in Passages North.\u00a0<\/em>She was also featured in our\u00a0Grad School Confidential series in 2015.<\/p>\n
