What&#8217;s that?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Looks like they&#8217;re looking specifically for majors in computer technology, information systems, etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So: probably not a good fit for an English major unless you have a minor or double major in that field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Repeat as necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Step 7<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Use &#8220;Career Fair 101&#8221; for tips about how to prepare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Step 8<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Use &#8220;Events&#8221; to learn about <strong>two upcoming info sessions to help you prepare. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Monday, Sept. 12 from 5-6 PM in the Schwartz Digital Complex in Bracken Library<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Wednesday, Sept 14 from 10-11 AM in Worthen Arena, Gate 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>Step 9\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Work on your &#8220;Elevator Pitch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><strong>You&#8217;ll want to say this:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">As an English major, I developed the skill of writing research papers about villains in the plays of Shakespeare and the gothic imagination of Faulkner, which, yeah, I\u2019m sure will come in <em>mighty<\/em> handy in this marketing position.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\">Ugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong><em>Say something like this instead:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">My senior seminar\u00a0project was a 25-page research paper on [insert topic], from which I learned how to independently manage large projects, appreciate diverse cultures, analyze and synthesize information, and form an original idea.\u00a0I&#8217;m a great writer, and I&#8217;d like to use my skills to help your company tell its story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a title=\"bsucc_liberalartspamphlet\" href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/09\/bsucc_liberalartspamphlet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">This flyer<\/a> has a lot of other great tips, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a title=\"english-major-transferable-skills\" href=\"https:\/\/bsuenglish.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/09\/english-major-transferable-skills.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">And this flyer<\/a> lists lots of transferable skills that English majors possess. You can use it to write an elevator pitch that speaks to your exact strengths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Step 10<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The last step&#8217;s the hardest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Just do it. Put on some nice clothes and go to Worthen Arena. If you&#8217;re nervous, tell yourself that you&#8217;re going to learn what might be the right fit for you&#8211;and what might be a bad fit. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/calendar\/events\/administrative\/career-center\/2016\/09\/14\/cardinaljobfair\" target=\"_blank\">Cardinal Job Fair<\/a> is this Wednesday, September 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Worthen Arena.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">You can rock it, #bsuenglish. You really can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Even if you don&#8217;t go to Worthen, download the app and start finding some stars to steer by.
