Owsley via the Alconda-Owsley Foundation, 2007.008.001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Written by DOMA Staff, article led by Noelle Giufridda<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you watching the new <a href=\"https:\/\/fxnow.fxnetworks.com\/shows\/shogun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sh\u014dgun<\/em><\/a> series on FX and Hulu this spring?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the popular 1975 novel by James Clavell, <em>Sh\u014dgun <\/em>takes place in Japan near the end Sengoku period (1467\u20131615), around 1600. A new ten-episode series that reimagines <em>Sh\u014dgun<\/em> premiered in February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the story, Lord Yoshii Toranaga fights for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him when a mysterious Dutch ship and its English pilot are found marooned at a fishing village in his territory. Many of <em>Sh\u014dgun\u2019s<\/em> characters are based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxnetworks.com\/shows\/shogun\/viewers-guide\/timeline-and-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">historical events and figures from Japanese history<\/a>. For instance, Toranaga is based on the warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu who became <em>sh\u014dgun<\/em> at the start of the Edo period (1615\u20131868).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the original novel and the popular television mini-series produced that aired on NBC in 1980 both centered on the Englishman John Blackthorne, the new version of <em>Sh\u014dgun<\/em> focuses more on Lord Toranaga, his vassals, and samurai. Through collaboration with some of Japan\u2019s most dedicated actors, artists, crew members, and cultural specialists, <em>Sh\u014dgun<\/em> brings unprecedented authenticity to the screen. Everything from the costumes, hairstyles, and movement of the characters to the dialogue in period accurate Japanese lines up with 1600.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DOMA has several works in its collection that relate to the Sengoku period of the show including a set of prints depicting a battle set in the 1590s. In <em>Sh\u014dgun<\/em>, Toranaga\u2019s treacherous half-brother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxnetworks.com\/shows\/shogun\/viewers-guide\/additional-characters%22%20\/l%20%22saeki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seiki<\/a> dons this same type of headgear.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of DOMA\u2019s works currently on display in the Asia galleries that relate to samurai culture date to the Edo period. Take a look at a blade and mounting for a long sword known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/doma-katana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>katana<\/em><\/a><strong> <\/strong>from around 1660. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/articles\/samurai-japanese-arms-armour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Victoria and Albert Museum<\/a>, the distinctive Japanese method of creating a blade \u201c. . . involves repeatedly folding and hammering billets of high and low carbon steel to form many layers which when brought together in the final folding produces a sword with a resilient core surrounded by a hard outer layer capable of cutting without bending or breaking.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DOMA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/doma-tosei-gusoku\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suit of armor<\/a><strong> <\/strong>designed during the peaceful Edo period, reflects an individual\u2019s taste and prestige but was not intended to defend against the wearer\u2019s enemies in battle.
