Women would tuck small personal items into their sleeves but men preferred to suspend their tobacco pouches, pipes, purses or writing utensils on a cord from their sash.<\/p>\n<p>These hanging objects were called&nbsp;<em>sagemono<\/em>. To stop the cord from slipping through the sash, a small toggle was attached called a&nbsp;<em>netsuke<\/em>&nbsp;(pronounced net-skey). The entire ensemble was worn at the waist and functioned as a removable pocket.<\/p>\n<p>For tiny art, Japanese <em>netsuke<\/em> are an enormous subject<em>.&nbsp;Netsuke<\/em>&nbsp;subjects portrayed in&nbsp;<i>netsuke<\/i>&nbsp;include legends, folklore, history, animals, flowers, insects, mythological creatures and more. Styles range from the intensely realistic to the abstract and surreal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Netsuke (A Kappa Caught in a Clam Shell)<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3084\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3084\" class=\"  wp-image-3084 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/02\/02121656\/museumbsu_2552_full-1.jpg\" alt=\"MuseumBSU_2552_full\" width=\"368\" height=\"336\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-3084\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Netsuke (A Kappa Caught in a Clam Shell),&nbsp;<\/em>Kyogyoku, <a href=\"https:\/\/dmr.bsu.edu\/digital\/collection\/MuseumBSU\/search\/searchterm\/1931.500.065\/field\/identi\/mode\/exact\/conn\/and\">1931.500.065<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>A&nbsp;<em>kappa<\/em>&nbsp;(<i>river-child<\/i>) is an amphibious&nbsp;y\u014dkai (are a class of supernatural monsters)&nbsp;demon&nbsp;found in traditional&nbsp;Japanese folklore. They are typically depicted as green, human-like beings with webbed hands and feet and a&nbsp;turtle-like&nbsp;carapace&nbsp;on their backs. A depression on its head, called its &#8220;dish,&#8221; retains water, and if this is damaged or its liquid is spilled, the kappa is severely weakened. As water monsters,&nbsp;<i>kappa<\/i>&nbsp;have been blamed for drownings, and are often said to try to lure people into water and pull them in with their great skill at&nbsp;wrestling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Netsuke (A Tengu Coming out of Its Shell)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-3085 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/02\/02121658\/museumbsu_2418_full.jpg\" alt=\"MuseumBSU_2418_full\" width=\"374\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/02\/02121658\/museumbsu_2418_full.jpg 997w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/02\/02121658\/museumbsu_2418_full-253x300.jpg 253w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/02\/02121658\/museumbsu_2418_full-865x1024.jpg 865w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2019\/02\/02121658\/museumbsu_2418_full-768x909.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/>Tengu<\/i>&nbsp;(heavenly dog)&nbsp;are a type of&nbsp;legendary creature&nbsp;found in Japanese folk religion. Although the name is from a dog-like&nbsp;Chinese&nbsp;demon, the&nbsp;<i>tengu<\/i>&nbsp;were originally thought to take the forms of&nbsp;birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics. Chinese literature assigns this creature a variety of descriptions, but most often it is a fierce&nbsp;canine monster that resembles a shooting star or comet.
