Although this painting is smaller than some that surround it, the color combinations attract my attention. I\u2019ve seen Chase\u2019s work in other museums, and I\u2019m pleased that this painting is included in our collection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2162\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2162\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2162 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/09\/02120314\/download.jpeg\" alt=\"download.jpeg\" width=\"393\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/09\/02120314\/download.jpeg 393w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/09\/02120314\/download-239x300.jpeg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Rest by the Wayside (Rest by the Roadside)<\/em>, William Merritt Chase, about 1902<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The painting, completed by William Merritt Chase in about 1902, exemplifies the artist\u2019s landscape period toward the end of his career. Chase, an Indiana native, studied in Indianapolis, New York and Munich, Germany before returning to the United States in 1878. The artist painted a wide array of subjects including portraits, still-lifes and landscapes, showcasing the breadth of his painting ability. Phillip Kennicott, an art critic at the Washington Post, wrote of Chase that \u201c\u2026his mastery of different styles, different national tendencies gleaned from cosmopolitan exposure to the breadth of Europe\u2019s art scene, can make it seem as if multiple painters are represented.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2177\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/09\/02120321\/img_2832-2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2177\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2177\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/09\/02120321\/img_2832-2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Processed with VSCO with f2 preset\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Rest by the Wayside\u00a0<\/em>on display<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From 1891 to 1902, when this painting was completed, Chase spent his summers in the\u00a0Shinnecock Hills of New York where he founded\u00a0the Shinnecock Summer School of Art. He spent time painting the nature around him, producing a series of vast landscapes which often featured a small human subject. The cool blues and greens of the vegetation paired with the hazy sky give the painting a dreamy feel, eventually directing the eye along the horizon to ponder where the dirt path leads. The mysterious human figure makes the viewer wonder why he is sitting alone in the wide landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Frank C. Ball, David Owsley\u2019s grandfather, purchased <em>Rest by the Wayside <\/em>from Chase\u2019s widow, Alice.
