The DOMA Insider has been providing the community with behind-the-scenes stories and reviews of events at the David Owsley Museum of Art since 2013. Content for the DOMA Insider is written by students, with the goal of providing the community with an insider’s perspective of the museum.

About three weeks ago, we introduced the majority of our summer 2019 interns. As mentioned, two new interns joined us as Second Summer Session began. This week, we’d like to introduce you to Molly Carpenter and Bailey Ruble!

My name is Molly Carpenter and I am a Senior Fine Art major concentrating in Glass, with an Art History minor. I am currently working as an education intern here at the museum! Although I joined the team a little later in the summer, I have been able to participate in an educational program called Connecting through Art, which brings people together by looking at and talking about artworks in DOMA. I led part of the program, and it was only my second day! In addition, I am doing research on various objects to help our docents have high quality, well researched materials when they lead tours. Working at DOMA has been a pleasure so far, as I have been able to apply what I have learned in my art history courses to my work experience, in addition to planning events and working as a team. Art is a huge part of my daily life, and having the opportunity to gain new skills and learn more about specific artworks helps me understand other artists and their motivations for creating. Learning about the past helps me appreciate it and pushes me towards making my own unique work in the future. A little fun fact: this picture of me was taken inside the ancient Roman forum in Italy while studying abroad with the art program this summer!

My name is Bailey Ruble, and I am an Animation major with a minor in Spanish. I am interning in Registration and Collections Management at DOMA, and my duties include taking inventory of our collection, updating information in our database, maintaining exhibits, and handling/relocating pieces of art. The option of working with the art collection is what drew me to  thing that drew me to DOMA. Although I’m an animation major, I also really love history and archaeology, so I was excited to see a job opportunity that combined both of my interests. I loved the idea of getting to do hands-on work behind the scenes, while also getting to learn more about the artwork that we have on campus. Plus, I had already had some work experience working in records management in a library in Boston, so I thought that this would be a good way to put some of the skills I acquired there to good use. Because I come from a family of painters who greatly value the fine arts, art has always been something that I care deeply about. Art is also a great “pick-me-up” for when I am feeling blue. Something unique about me is that I can speak Spanish fluently!

We are very excited to be working with both Molly and Bailey during this summer!
