{"id":3235,"date":"2025-06-04T11:02:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T15:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/csh\/?p=3235"},"modified":"2026-02-05T12:08:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T17:08:23","slug":"venturellis-lab-publishes-marine-recreational-fishing-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/csh\/2025\/06\/04\/venturellis-lab-publishes-marine-recreational-fishing-project\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s O-FISH-ial: Dr. Venturelli\u2019s Lab Publishes Mapping Project Over Marine Recreational Fishing Around the World\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Brenna Large<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the world\u2019s most popular fishing app and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Nature Conservancy<\/a>, Dr. Paul Venturelli and his team of graduate students completed a project to map marine recreational fishing efforts across the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project detailed patterns of recreational fishing in countries, working with over ten years of catch records, which documented:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over a million catches,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over 2000 species of fish,&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By a quarter of a million fishers,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recorded from 184 countries and territories&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Their study explored new methods for quantifying and valuing recreational fishing, which can provide critical information on the distribution of recreational fishing for coastal and marine spatial planning. He came to Ball State University in 2017. His research has largely focused on studying fisheries science in the digital age. His lab has not only been producing innovative research, but it has also been providing students with experience in research and other critical data science skills. He was involved with multiple stages of the project, including the early data structuring and developing the visualization of the maps &#8212; he specifically tackled how to consistently visualize fishing hotspots across the globe. When asked about how this opportunity would help him with his future endeavors, he said, \u201cHaving worked with a large and well-known organization like <em>The Nature Conservancy<\/em> will be great for future opportunities alone.
