Agnew&#8217;s<\/strong> article &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00940798.2022.2086469\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On (Not) &#8216;Humanizing&#8217; Muslims: Challenge and Opportunity in an Oral History Project with American Muslims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; has been published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/oralhistory.org\/\">ORAL HISTORY REVIEW<\/a>, the leading journal in the field of Oral History. It appeared online in August 2022, and in the print journal edition in late Fall 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Matthew Hotham\u2019s<\/strong> chapter \u201c\u2018I Too Desired a Child\u2019: Sufi Hagiography, Ibn Khafif, and the Problem of Celibacy\u201d was published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Routledge-Handbooks-in-Religion\/book-series\/RHR\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Routledge Handbook of Religion and the Body<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He has given numerous conference presentations and public lectures on the topics of Islamophobia and Muslim Futurism. He also became co-editor of the Islam section for the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/compass.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/17498171\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Religion Compass<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He published an essay called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/philarchive.org\/archive\/HARRFA-8\">Racial Fraud and the American Binary<\/a>\u201d in December 2022, which deals with the academic versions of Rachel Dolezal. He also has an essay forthcoming on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legacyofslavery.harvard.edu\/alumni\/richard-theodore-greener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Richard T. Greener<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which will be the first ever comprehensive analysis of this important person\u2019s philosophy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Dr. David Concepci\u00f3n<\/strong> has been very busy this year teaching four new classes in addition to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stancephilosophy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stance<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and ethics. He\u2019s now offering a five-week course called \u201cMalarky,\u201d which centers on a famous little book by Harry Frankfurt. He\u2019s also teaching one of Ball State\u2019s new \u201cFirst Year Seminars,\u201d a special class designed specifically to help students transition to college successfully. Fall 2022, he taught what we believe is the first core curriculum course to come with the designation \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/about\/administrativeoffices\/vice-provost\/student-services\/high-impact-practices\">High Impact Practice: Undergraduate Research.<\/a>\u201d By the end of the term the first-semester students in the course presented their own original research to a panel of professors from universities around North America. Lastly, he is teaching an Honors Colloquium focused specifically on climate ethics and policy. After learning the basic science of climate change and how to argue as a philosopher, each student presents a detail-rich recommendation as if they have an audience with an important decision maker.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Dr. Concepci\u00f3n<\/strong> had a short piece of writing on the \u201cline up\u201d pedagogy accepted for publication. And he has given a number of peer-reviewed presentations, including one concerning what is morally required of a person if they wish to eventually be thought of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engagedphilosophy.com\/2022\/11\/09\/david-w-concepcion\/\">as a good ancestor<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Dr. Sarah Vitale<\/strong> has continued her work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/philosophyoutreachproject.azurewebsites.net\/\">Philosophy Outreach Project<\/a>. Because of her work with the project, she was asked to serve on the advisory board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plato-philosophy.org\/\">Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization (PLATO)<\/a>. She also serves as coordinator of the Muncie Community Schools\/Ball State Connections program for the College of Sciences and Humanities. In this role she coordinates visits to Muncie Central High School, allowing high school students to learn more about Ball State and our programs. She also serves as the co-coordinator of the Radical Philosophy Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Dr. Jeffrey Fry<\/strong> took a research leave in Spring 2023, during which he has taken several courses at his alma mater in Bloomington. He is preparing a presentation \u201cOn Sport and Freedom\u201d for the summer, which he\u2019ll give at Penn State University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #ba0c00\">Alumni<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A small but mighty group of alumni are participating in a bi-weekly Zoom-based reading group. We\u2019ve read some Rawls and some Plato and a whole bunch of other things. If you\u2019re interested in joining, contact <a href=\"dwconcepcion@bsu.edu\">Dr. Concepcion<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Derek Gosman<\/strong> (\u201813) is now Dr. Goz, not to be confused with a recent Senatorial candidate. He received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Ball State in 2021, has since been licensed as a psychologist, and is now in neuropsychology postdoctoral residency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Ben Rogers<\/strong> (\u201814) has been editing and submitting portions of his first full-length poetry volume. He makes some money selling granola to suburbanite hippies. He then plans to continue pursuing professional theatre as an actor and fight choreographer in Chicago and New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Ash Totten<\/strong> is graduating with a Bachelor in Architecture, with a focus on social and environmental justice. She will be pursuing a career as an architect and advocate in Boston and New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Rachel Johnson<\/strong> is graduating with a major in philosophy and a minor in history. She plans to pursue a masters in philosophy, focusing on applied ethics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #ba0c00\">Activities and Programs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The Philosophy Outreach Project (POP)<\/strong> is excited to hosted its fifth annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/philosophyoutreachproject.bsu.edu\/conferences\/2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conference for Pre-College Philosophical Engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on April 19, 2023. Over 100 high school students from around the state will join Ball State students and faculty for a day of interactive breakout sessions and philosophical discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Philosophy and Religion Conversation Hour<\/strong> has been meeting weekly with great attendance and lively discussion.
