{"id":220,"date":"2019-10-13T09:56:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-13T13:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/csh\/?p=220"},"modified":"2022-09-01T22:20:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T02:20:00","slug":"letter-from-the-history-chair-fall-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/csh\/2019\/10\/13\/letter-from-the-history-chair-fall-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter from the History Chair-  Fall 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Faculty, Student and Alumni Colleagues,<\/p>\n<p>Halfway into the fall semester I must reflect on the fact that in a world of limited space and resources filled with 7.7 billion people, and subject to constant natural and cultural changes, we all need to \u201crun very fast\u201d and adapt in order to survive. It is also true however, that trying to do this alone is a recipe for disaster. We all need the diverse talents and possibilities that we as individuals bring to the mix. We are social animals; and whether we like it or not, we need each other, and, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/csh\/category\/history\/\">history department<\/a>, it is our mission to reflect on how humans in the past have succeeded and failed at the project of living together. The lounge is for students of any discipline, although you will probably find it frequented by History, Anthropology and Women\u2019s and Gender Studies students any hour of the day. Professor Zhuk\u2019s talk and the Vietnam Moratorium Conference were co-sponsored events, with History as one of the participating sponsors, and Professor Myers\u2019 upcoming talk will be of interest to Anthropologists and Spanish faculty and students as well as historians.<\/p>\n<p>We are in this business of academia together, and we are stronger together\u2014a diverse and healthy, interactive ecosystem. In fact, this newsletter would not even be possible without sponsoring help from the Office of the Dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/csh\">College of Sciences and Humanities<\/a> and the assistance of good friends and allies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/english\">Department of English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We thrive in community, and we are grateful for that.
