Giovanny Guia is a first-year master’s student in the CMHC program.

Where is your hometown?
My hometown is in Indianapolis, Indiana!

Where did you obtain your bachelor’s, and what were your major(s)?
I got my bachelor’s degree at Ball State University and my majors were Psychological Science and Sociology!

What first interested you in psychology?
I was first interested in psychology when my high school teacher talked about it to the entire class. She explained what psychology was, and a year later I took the class as an elective. After finishing the class, I realized I wanted to major in psychology when I got into college. Also, understanding how the mind works and learning more about the different subsets of psychology fascinated me.

Why did you choose Ball State?
I chose to attend Ball State University for two reasons: the programs and the scenery. I’ve heard many good things about the psychological science and counseling programs which led me to stay for my bachelor’s and now, my master’s degree. Ball State also has beautiful scenery for those who love taking small walks just like me! Exploring the campus, by walking, cleared my mind when I was stressed or overwhelmed. It has also been fun going out with friends to class or to get coffee.

What’s the best part of being a student at Ball State?

The best part of being a student at Ball State is making connections with other students and professors. I’ve met many friends along my graduate journey, and I’ve made many connections with professors. It makes me feel at home as I’m able to interact with others who are pursuing the same or similar field as me. Another best part of being a student is learning more about the course material in counseling (I know, I’m a nerd), but it enhances it strengthens my abilities and skills as a future counselor.

What are your future and career goals?

After obtaining my master’s degree in CMHC, my goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. I want to further my education and expand my knowledge and skills within the field. Also, I plan to be an LMHC and LMFT, primarily working with couples by incorporating EFT!

What is your favorite campus tradition or event?

The carnival has to be my favorite campus event!

If you could have any superpower for one day, what would it be and how would you use it?

It would have to be teleportation! I want to teleport to different parts of the world like France, Mexico, and Greece.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would go to Mexico because my grandparents live there. I haven’t seen them in a while, so being able to go there and see my grandparents would make me feel happy. Also, I’ve never been to Mexico, so I want to experience what my parents and grandparents experienced when living there and while growing up.

What is something about you that people would be surprised to know?

I’m not sure if this would be considered surprising, but when I was in elementary school, I was in a Volleyball and Cross-Country team.
