During this interactive presentation we will dip our toes into the community food experience, learn from those directly impacted by hunger and food insecurity and walk away with support solutions to affect change in the health of our community.
Food insecurity is defined simply as not enough access to sufficient, quality, food to meet one’s basic needs. In the United States alone we know that 1 in 8 people face hunger every day, including more than 12 million children and nearly one-third of college students. All this happening in one of the most abundant food producing countries in the world. Food insecurity is associated with many health-related issues such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obesity and depression, costing the United States billions in healthcare dollars.

Dr. Matt Moore, Ball State Department of Social Work
Dr. Matt Moore completed his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and psychology from Hanover College and went on to earn his MSW and Ph.D. from Indiana University. His research focuses on the integration of social work in sports, which has led to several journal publications, national presentations, and the first ever Sport Social Work textbook. He is the Editor for the Sport Social Work Journal, which is the only peer-reviewed journal with an emphasis on Sport Social Work. Additionally, he is the co-founder and Past President of the Alliance of Social Workers in Sports (ASWIS). He has extensive experience working with multiple sports organizations from the youth to professional level. He grew up in West Virginia and has a deep passion for rural communities, poverty, and food insecurity. Matt currently serves as an Associate Professor and Chair for the Department of Social Work at Ball State University.
Hanna Kelley, American Dairy Association Indiana
Hanna Kelley, RD, LD, is the Director of Health and Wellness for the American Dairy Association Indiana (ADAI), working on behalf of Indiana’s 750 dairy farm families for the last 6 years. As a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, Hanna is passionate about the health of our community, helping others understand the facts about food and where it comes from and ensuring access to nutritious, affordable food is available for everyone. She provides science-based nutrition information to healthcare providers, schools, the media and the community. She is currently serving as Past President of the Indiana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in addition to volunteering on the Healthy Schools Action Team for the Hoosier Health and Wellness Alliance.
Sunni Matters, Second Harvest Food Bank
Sunni Matters is the Director of Impact at Second Harvest Food Bank. As the leader of the impact team, Sunni supervises all the initiatives, programs, and distributions for Second Harvest Food Bank. She earned her master’s degree at Ball State University in Sociology with a post graduate certificate in Institutional Research. Sunni is active in the Muncie community and serves on the board for Prevent Child Abuse of Delaware County.
Carol Bradshaw, Second Harvest Food Bank
Carol Bradshaw is the Forward STEPS Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank. Forward STEPS is an initiative of Second Harvest that focuses on communities learning about poverty and neighbor economic mobility. She earned her master’s degree at Ball State University in Executive Development for Public Service with an emphasis in Adult and Community Education. She’s an advocate and volunteer in the community and is the current chair of Cornerstone Center for the Arts Board of Directors.
