Hello, my name is Kyra Davis! I recently received my BFA in Graphic Design from Ball State. I’ve had the pleasure of working as a marketing assistant at the campus career center for the past year. My advisor informed me about this student employment position through an email, providing a list of available positions for art students. Though I never considered marketing to be an area I wanted to work in, I am glad I decided to apply anyway, because it was a wonderful work experience.

In the Career Center, I had the opportunity to use my design knowledge as well as develop new skills, such as filming, working with social media, and analyzing data. It was through this job that I discovered my love for video editing, something I would not have had a chance to develop much in my classes. Getting a job through the school is itself a benefit because your employers understand you have a tight schedule and are willing to work with you to give you hours.

For any students who are looking for student employment and are on the fence about trying something new, just go for it! Even if a position isn’t quite what you want to pursue outside of school or doesn’t apply to your field, you can always find benefits. For example, working in customer service for a year helped me develop better communication skills, which has been greatly beneficial when it comes to working with clients or other team members. Trying something new can give a different perspective in your field, which will help you stand out in your future career!
