As the Class of 2025 gears up for graduation, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2025 report provides a glimpse into the hiring landscape. Here are some highlights that could shape the career journey of Ball State University students.

An Upswing in Hiring

Good news for graduates: hiring is expected to grow by 7.3% compared to last year. Industries like finance, insurance, real estate, and manufacturing lead the charge, with double-digit increases in hiring. However, fields like computer and electronics manufacturing are seeing declines, so students should stay flexible and explore adjacent opportunities.

The Hybrid Work Trend

Hybrid roles remain options for entry-level positions, with 54% of jobs offering this flexibility. Ball State students should focus on developing digital communication and teamwork skills to excel in these environments.

Skills-Based Hiring

A whopping 65% of employers now use skills-based hiring practices, emphasizing competencies as well as degrees. Ball State students should highlight concrete skills like problem-solving, communication, and technical proficiencies in their resumes and during interviews. With tools like the NACE Competency Assessment and the Experience Journal, the Career Center can help students assess and showcase these skills.

Competitive Salaries and Bonuses

Most employers plan to increase salaries for new hires and over half are offering signing bonuses. For Ball State grads, this is a reminder to research market rates and confidently negotiate offers.

Majors Matter Less

Nearly a quarter of employers are open to hiring graduates from any major. This presents a golden opportunity for Cardinals to pitch their unique blend of skills and experiences, regardless of their field of study.

With employers emphasizing skills and flexibility, the Career Center at Ball State is here to help students prepare for these changes. From strategic connections with industry to including your competencies in your resume and discussions, leveraging campus resources can set you apart.
