Master students in historic preservation diligently worked with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greentownhistory.org\">Greentown Historical Society<\/a> in Greentown, Indiana, to document the street facades of the historic district downtown as well as the interior documentation of the buildings owned by the Greentown Historical Society at the corner of Meridian and Main.<\/p>\n<p>Ball State was commissioned to complete measurements, drawings, and photogrammetry that would completely document the buildings in order to put together a set of HABS (Historic American Building Survey) drawings. The drawings would then be sent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/photos\/?q=HABS\">Library of Congress<\/a> in Washington D.C. where anyone can access them online. The purpose of this process is to document the existing conditions of historic buildings and to preserve the original integrity of their era that alterations and renovations can destroy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_243\" style=\"width: 338px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-243\" class=\" wp-image-243\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18075829\/Picture3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18075829\/Picture3.png 705w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18075829\/Picture3-300x187.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students create HABS drawings for the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Building Documentation<\/h3>\n<p>Students in the studio courses learned how to carry out initial field measurements and field notes on the buildings to take back to the studio to develop preliminary drawings. The drawings are then taken back to the site to continue a more through documentation process; measuring window and door openings, placement of structural elements, and noting the orientation and pattern of the flooring to name a few. A conditions assessment is also performed to document the existing condition of the building such as the condition of exterior masonry and interior water damage.<\/p>\n<p>To perform the photogrammetry on the buildings, students took pictures of the exteriors that overlap each other. The pictures were processed using two different programs that create a 3D mesh model of the exterior. In addition to the 3D mesh, all measurements were input into a CAD program to finalize their drawings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_246\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-246\" class=\" wp-image-246\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18080222\/sign-793x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18080222\/sign-793x1024.png 793w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18080222\/sign-232x300.png 232w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18080222\/sign-768x992.png 768w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2020\/06\/18080222\/sign.png 819w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students taking measurements of exterior sign for documentation.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A written history was also completed. Students met with the historical society and researched online for archival information. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/sanborn-maps\">Sanborn Fire Insurance maps<\/a> were used extensively to see when the buildings changed over time. The Sanborn Map Company was a publisher of detailed maps of U.S. cities and towns in the 19th and 20th centuries and are invaluable for tracking changes in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Built_environment\">built environment<\/a>\u00a0of American cities over many decades.<\/p>\n<p>It was discovered that the buildings were built in the early 1900s and have been home to many different businesses including a bank, service station, and grocery store as well as apartments.<\/p>\n<p>This project was a great hands-on experience for both the students and town representatives, discovering the processes and understanding their city\u2019s aesthetic and cultural history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Story by MSHP Students Students learn the value of preservation in Jonathan Spodek\u2019s documentation and preservation technology studio courses.
