He calls his lecture &#8220;Bangkok Bastards,&#8221; defining the term as &#8220;homegrown architectural concoctions created by everyday people &#8230; to solve everyday problems &#8230; in everyday life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&#8220;Bastards&#8221; may include a rundown shack in a neighborhood <i>chumchon<\/i> (slum), a local street vendor cart, a bastardized shophouse, or a make-shift sidewalk bench.\u00a0 Bangkokians walk past these examples every day, but would never consider it as serious design or <b><i>A<\/i><\/b>rchitecture.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chat obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from U.C. Berkeley in 1994 and his Masters of Architecture at Harvard University\u2019s Graduate School of Design in 2000.\u00a0 After completing his studies in the US, Chat returned to his birthplace of Bangkok to form CHAT architects, a practice combining research and design, resulting in innovative multi-scalar projects that aim to stimulate community through strategies that re-interpret authentic local conditions. In 2015, he created CHAT lab, a research think tank aimed at discovering new Thai vernacular \u201cstreet\u201d typologies, affectionately called &#8220;<\/span>Bangkok Bastards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1487 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/01\/31155350\/CHAT-SamsenStreet-099-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/01\/31155350\/CHAT-SamsenStreet-099-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/01\/31155350\/CHAT-SamsenStreet-099-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/01\/31155350\/CHAT-SamsenStreet-099-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/01\/31155350\/CHAT-SamsenStreet-099-1536x1229.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/01\/31155350\/CHAT-SamsenStreet-099-2048x1638.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Like its human namesake, an architectural <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bastard<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has no traceable architectural parents\/lineage, no cultural history, no design theory that legitimizes it form, he says.\u00a0 Many view bastards as eyesores to the city, lacking in any serious design pedigree, and unworthy of serious documentation or research.\u00a0 However, he argues that Bangkok bastards are the most authentically inventive examples of architecture in Thailand.\u00a0 They are pure, intuitive, flexible, humorous responses to real problems. Often times, their strategies utilize cheap, salvaged, discarded materials\u2026hacked, re-imagined, and repurposed in entirely new and unexpected ways. They take advantage of existing urban conditions, turn them upside down, to create a new way of living, selling, playing in the capital city of Bangkok.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His talk will include an exploration of how &#8220;Bangkok Bastards&#8221; can potentially lead to the discovery of &#8220;Indiana Crossbreeds.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>This lecture has been approved for AIA credits.
