The project is to design and construct a net-zero energy home in Indianapolis with the help of local community partners and sponsors. A net-zero energy home is one that makes at least as much energy onsite as it uses on an annual basis and is the preeminent model of green residential design in the world today. The competition leverages students and universities to inspire the building industry and provides students opportunities for real-world, hands-on learning in preparation in sustainability-related careers.

BACKGROUND
ECAP has an 8+ year history of design and construction experience with the Solar Decathlon program. In 2013, the college collaborated with the University of Louisville on a Build Challenge house. From 2017-present, the Dept. of Architecture has engaged over 20 student-led teams in the Design Challenge winning 5 national awards. The 2023 SDBC continues ECAP’s interest in net-zero, green, affordable housing by working with a local partner to design and build a house in an East Side neighborhood of Indianapolis experiencing significant revitalization. Working with community and industry partners allows Ball State to provide hand-on learning for students, to contribute to community efforts outside the university, and to market our degree programs on a national stage.

Faculty & Administrative Advisors
Pam Harwood, Tom Collins, Dan Overbey – Dept of Architecture; Chris Marlow – Dept of Landscape Architecture; Donna Browne – CERES; Jim Jones & Sherif Attalah – Dept of Construction Management & Interior Design

Funding
2021-22 Ball State Immersive Learning Provost Grant, College of Architecture & Planning Dean’s Office, US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Award (necessary for Phase 2), Other fundraising and donations

Community Partner
Englewood Community Development Corporation, Indianapolis, IN

Course Involvement
ARCH 400 & 602 – Comprehensive Architecture Studio, Arch 401 and 602: Integrated Design, ARCH 602: Community Engaged Design, LA: Engineering, and Arch 598: Dwellings, CMID Independent Study.

Timeline
Phase 1: Project Proposal Development/Submissions Aug 21’-April 22’
Phase 2: Project Construction (If funded) Aug 22’-April 23’

Opportunities for Involvement
ECAP is looking for collaborators to contribute to the SDBC project in areas that include but are not limited to marketing, finance, project management, procurement, fundraising, residential real estate development, health/wellbeing, etc. Involvement may take the form of student engagement through a course, independent study, thesis, etc.; faculty involvement through research or workshops; student employee involvement; and student group/organization involvement.

Contact:
Tom Collins, Dept of Architecture – tdcollins@bsu.edu, 617-721-8713

GUEST LECTURE SERIES LINEUP MONDAYS | 4:00 PM | Zoom Links & viewing in AB 100 For a link to watch the lecture, email caplectures@bsu.edu.
